Spawning partially colonized cakes to horse poo!
    #5857939 - 07/14/06 02:48 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

So I've decided to take the plunge into horse poo casings at last.  Unfortunately, I've run into a bit of a timing problem, and now have a bit of a decision to make.  I started a bunch of jars thinking that I'd downcheck a few when the time came, but none of them are finished yet, although all of them are well on their way.  My six BRF jars are about 60-70% finished right now, but I'd like to get the poo colonizing sooner rather than later.  Would it be kosher to spawn the mostly-finished cakes to the poo, or am I just asking for trouble?  My reasoning is that as long as it's a sterile mycelial mass (there's plenty of colonized substrate for the job between all the jars) then I'll be fine.

But will it work, or would I just be opening myself up to a whole new world of contam problems?  :frown:

you should wait untill the cakes are completly colonized, if not you'll have contam problems

You are asking for trouble.

Because, you will be adding things to contaminate resistant h/poo.

That is not so resistant.

I think it has to be blessed by a rabbi to be kosher.

Letting them finish and then spawning will probably be faster in the long run anyway.  The more (and healthier) the spawn, the faster the whole load will colonize.

I can sympathize with timing restraints but when you do things half assed you get half assed results.  :frown:

I'm trying it right now.

just added a casing layer.

two seperate monotubs.
bacterially infected jars with partial colonization.

just for the hell of it.

everything looks okay so far.

I used iodine, bleach, and peroxide solutions in rinsing the myc.

crazy experiment.
I'll post some pics when/IF they fruit.

haha i've got the same thing in progress.

my crazy experiments lead to bacterial contam'd jars quite a bit.  i had 5 pf cakes that looked pissed off.  took them forever to colonize the surface, had gross looking brown spots on them.  didn't really smell but i've had enough bacterial contam to know it when i see it... crumbled them and they were not colonized on the insides at all... almost all the colonization was around the surface of the jar.  so whatever, crumbled 'em all together and gave a good dousing/dunking with some strong h2o2/h2o solution.  laid out in a baking tray, covered and waited and watched.  took about 5 days for anything to happen, looked the same.. then suddenly overnight they started fuzzing up (h2o2 finally broken down?)... another day later they were very white and knitting together into a nice block of substrate... smelling like fresh mushrooms again... gave it one more day (brings us to last night) and it was cased.  between all the myc piss in the jars and all the h2o2 i think my mycelium has won over the bacteria.  will find out very soon how it will fruit.

so yeah there's always a chance that you can get away with using partially finished, or even lightly contam'd jars.  its just not the best of ideas... makes for fun experiments to observe just how resilliant 'cubes are, but doesn't make for good general practices of course.  in my case i purposely didn't spawn them to anything; i was expecting the lag time while the h2o2 broke down from past experiences, and that could have been enough time for a bulk sub to start going south.  i've tried this in the past as well with spawning them to bulk, and it went nowhere, the myc in that situation obviously wasn't vigorous enough to both win out over contam and start colonizing more substrate... seems to focus its energy on one or the other.  so again to the original poster, your mileage may vary if you go ahead with your partial jars.
