too much vermiculite ?
    #5857549 - 07/14/06 10:11 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Is it possible the spore syringe's water can get stuck in the vermiculite layer?
Thanks a lot

you should be sticking your needle all the way in past the vermiculite layer. if it doesn't reach past, you need to be looking for a longer needle. any of the standard 1.5" needles the vendors typically use should go well past your verm layer, your verm layer should only be around 0.5-.75 of an inch.

i would also think if it was squirted in the verm layer that it would leak down past it?

yes it would... but lots of it would be absorbed and the spores would stick to the verm up top where they can't possibly germinate, so its a pretty wasteful and inefficient way to inoculate.

ok, well, i put my jar to a side, and some of the vercumlite shifted, so i injected the needle and squirted the spore water onto the rice cake... is that alright?

it should be fine.

the verm shouldn't really be able to shift, it should be packed in there (not so much as to pack down your cake, but packed in enough so that it can't move around). if its able to shift around, its not able to do its job of contamination barrier so well, so careful how you manage your holes. (i'd personally cover with micropore tape in your situation, or you can return the foil lid to it and make sure not to lift it until they're colonized.) with a good solid verm layer you don't need to cover holes at all, and the benefit is slightly speedier colonization... but that's not a risk you should take if the verm is loose.
