does anyone know how to use a pressure cooker? i've got this Presto cooker, it doesn't look too fancy, it has this knob this that i assume goes on top, i've really got no idea how much water to put in, or how to do the psi, any advice about it would be appreciated.

read your instruction manual...don't use it until you have, chances are you'll kill yourself or do lots of damage to the surrounding area.

There should be a method of locking the top onto the base of the pot, after you have filled it with items, then water to the water line. Place the little pressure regulator onto the place at the top. Turn heat. Wait for the sound. You'll know the sound when you hear it. Time for about an hour once you hear that sound. When your hour or so is up, turn off the heating element and let the pressure cooker sit over night, or at least 5 hours before opening. That being the most important part. If you open when it's still warm there could still be pressure inside that will blow if you give it the chance.

You should ALWAYS follow the specific instructions issued by the manufacturer of the brand and model of your pressure cooker.
Unfortunately, some people aren't able to obtain that information for various reasons. Here is a short and sweet step-by-step guide to using a pressure cooker.
1. Put items in cooker. There should be a rack underneath your items. If you don't have the rack you can use a wet towel.
2. Fill with water to about 1-1.5 inches.
3. Put on top and lock down or twist on.
4. Place weight (knob) on top of steam outlet.
5. Turn burner on high.
6. Wait for it to reach pressure. The weight will start to rattle or jiggle and emit steam.
7. Reduce burner to perhaps med-high or until weight jiggles a couple times per minute.
8. Set timer for length of pressure cook cycle, as per the tek you are using.
9. When time expires turn off heat.
10. Wait for pressure cooker to cool to the touch. Do not cool with water or manually vent the steam. You may use a gentle fan, on LOW and at a distance, to assist cooling.
11. When cool to the touch, carefully remove weight.
12. Remove lid and sterilized items.
Good luck.

Steps 4 and 5 above need to be reversed. It's important to allow the PC to begin to boil and vent steam for at least five minutes before placing the weight on the vent tube. RR
