    #5855429 - 07/13/06 05:51 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hey just found this in my yard growing in some moss. Anyone know what it is?

in case the pics are not clear or maybe didn't even work these are the characteristics:

light Grayish brown cap
pinkish ring around edge of cap
cap the side of a quarter
bright yellow and foamy under cap
grew in grass and moss
stem clearly purple at the foot when fresh
bruises dark green on stem, bright orange under cap

ps shroomydan is awesome!

I like how all you guys think bluing in Boletes makes them toxic  :smirk: Boletus badius is classed as highly gourmet yet blues vividly, one of my favorites.

That is however not B. badius.

You make a valid point, however, under the circumstances that an ID request was made, it is fair to assume that the user does not know what a bolete is to begin with, and thus, it would be risky to leave the judgement of a potentially toxic mushroom up to a novice.

I agree with Red Crayon, in this instance, the user should consider this mushroom and any bolete that turns blue, as a poisonous one. When and if the new hunter decides to do their homework, they may be more qualified to distinguish between poisonous and edible boletes. I have a pic comparison somewhere i recently posted....

Found it:

the general rules are set for novice hunters, and people who might not be able to distinguish this mushroom, Boletus miniato-pallescens, a poisonous bolete:

From this mushroom, Boletus bicolor, a good edible:

1. Avoid blue staining/brusing boletes.

2. Avoid boletes with pore colour ranging from red to orange(for me, this means yellow because it isn't always easy to distinguish orange from yellow).

3. Because of certain intolerances reported by some individuals to some boletes within the Leccinum genus that have an orange cap, avoidance of these mushrooms is advised.

*These rules exclude some choice edibles, but if you are uncertain, you'd better be safe than sorry.

Here is a good page explaining the rules for picking boletes for the table:

Hi Amy,

That's a pretty little bolete. As the others have indicated it should be considered poisonous. Keep looking for that chicken mushroom. I look forward to seeing the photos when you find one.
