FLA: Coprinus comatus found today (1 Pic)

These were found roadside, in the grass and mulch and bushes.
A choice edible, also known as Shaggy Manes:
The other day I also found a very nice patch of Strobilomyces floccopus, also known as The Old Man of the Woods. And they were surpriseingly yummy cooked up with noodles.
Pretty nice Shaggys tho huh? I don't find them very often here in Florida.

I've had old man of the woods before, taste better than they look lolz
Picture perfect specimens you got there, how are you planning on cooking them up? I think they go well with eggs

The Shaggys were cooked up with eggs, and they tasted somewhat like seafood.
The patch of Old Man of the Woods I found yesterday was the nicest and biggest patch Ive ever seen. They were fried up and then added to some noodles, and they were pretty darn good.

You get Xerocomus/Boletus badius over there??? They're perhaps my favorite mushroom to eat. Tastier than Cep/Porcini IMO and they fruit in such profusion here, normally with Birch.
They defy the edible bolete rule though as they stain blue

GreatOne.. I find them living alone or two to a family... Do you find them often all growing together? Man I need to take a pic of our Shags here I bet they may be a bit of a separate strain It seems every time I find them I don't have a camera....

mmmmmmmmm... shaggyyyyyy.... Is Boletus badius really that good? I find them all the time, but I never thought to take some home (considering the massive amounts of species of Boletus and Sullius in GA, there are too many to choose from). I've tried the ol' man sauteed and steamed before. Can't say I cared for em too much.

I have only found Coprinus comatus once. Two mushrooms were growing a few feet apart amongst some woodchips in the parking lot outside a Home Depot. I picked one... That was my very first experience with the genus Coprinus, and the resulting black goop took me by surprise! Since, i have found numerous other species of ink caps, one of the most common I find, but no other C. comatus.
You say it tastes like seafood?? Eeeehh... that sounds funky.

They are actually very good in my experience.
How they taste depends on what stage of growth you pick them in and how you cook them.

One of my favorite also Blue Meanie.
I actually only like about five edible shrooms period. Most taste like rubber to me, or like a dull gummy bear texture.

If you find any more shaggy manes, I'd sure appreciate a culture. I'm looking for a warm weather strain. Mine only fruits in cool weather. RR

I really like them! They go well in pasta dishes, with steak and loads of other stuff
The leading mycologist in my area rates them as his favorite too! He prefers them to chanterelle or morels
