Network Switches

I have recently purchased a network switch for my home network (2 computers). The network was originally formed using a crossover cable (direct connection from one computer to another).
I have connected up the switch but cant seem to get it to work right. I can only seem to get a single connection at one time. At first i got the other computer to work with the switch. After some tampering (replacing network cards, disconnecting modem, changing slots on the switch) I got this one to work, but then the other wouldn't. It is most probably my error in some way, i have no clue how I got the connection to work with this computer, but now I have the same problem but visa-versa.
Do i need to reinstall the network drivers? Format windows? Disconnected modem?
..really i have no clues here, the switch came with little/no instruction, but to be honest, it should just be plug & play. The configurations on the system is what i think is causing the conflict.
Any ideas?
Peace, Mushie Man

Are you still using the crossover cable or did you get patch cables? Do you have a broadband router or any other standalone DHCP server?

Yes, it sounds a lot like he's using 1 patch and 1 crossover cables.

Most switches should work in either regular or crossover mode.
When you say "only one works" do you mean getting an internet connection? Because to my knowledge switches do not have integrated routers, and will not be able to share a broadband connection without one.

I went and purchased a standard network cable today to replace the cross over, So im pretty sure the cable is not the problem.

Yeah, only one computer is receiving an internet connection.
I was originally going to purchase a router, but my brother insisted on getting a switch for "simplicity".

Sounds like you should return the switch and get a router. Tell your brother he's dumb . Or set up internet connection sharing on one of your computers but a router is really the better option.

The original set up was set through a connection via his computer, looks like thats going to be a short term resort while I get a router, although it sucks when he restarts/crashes/turns off his system.
He can fork out the cash for a router, so pissed off right now.
Cheers for the advice, Mushie Man

yeah, the problem is that you have no NAT. you got the data link layer, but the network layer is what makes a router a router instead of a switch. you need something with dhcp so you both have a unique ip addy. if you have a spare old pc somewhere you can put extra nic cards in it and use it as a firewall/router. i know how to do that in linux if you want to go that route.
whatever's clever.

^^ what automan said.
Or you could run a proxy server on your machine with the internet connection, then assign an ip to the second PC, and in your web browser settings put in the proxy settings. ( usualy the same IP as the machine with the proxy )
I would recomend analog X's proxy server since it is small, fast and works great for general internet surfing.

I'm curious how one would resolve DNS, etc, using the system you describe?

Good question!, and good point.
I think I may have misunderstood the original question. I assumed that the primary PC hooked up to the internet had two nic's, one for the internet connection and a second for the switch.
But now you got me thinking... It should work using my method as long as the server PC has two nics. and Internal and External. As far as I understand proxying the client machines do not need to resolv any DNS names, the acual proxy does that. But the client machines browsers need to have the proxy information configured. Unless it is a transparent proxy, then you have nat redirecting the flow of traffic forcing it to the proxy and back.
But using my method, the client machine could not use FTP, ICMP, bittorrent, unless the proxy supported those.
Please correct me if I am wrong!

DNS is done by proxy server.

Only for browsing... my point was that you cannot use the setup for more than browsing the web. Perhaps DNS was a bad service to use as an example.
