newb with questions

Hi im new to growing mushrooms and i have a few questions.
I already have 5 cakes which i inoculated with Ecuador strain and they seem to grow O.K I used 230ml jelly jars and i had to make my own brown rice flour becouse NObody sells this here.I also used so called incubator wich i made from two plastic boxes that fit and an aquarium heater wich was set to 30C and what i found out that the mycelium grows better without this incubator - is it possible that it's too hot.i have turned it off now and it seems to grow better. another thing i saw on pictures that some people turn the jars upside down while colonizing.does this help them colonize faster? I'm also interested in yield.i've read here that i can expect from 5-15 grams (dried) from a single cake - after a few flushes. Is this realistic for a first timer?
Thats all i can think of now thx for teh answers

You slap them upside down so that the substrate pulls away from the bottom. This allows the myc to colonize the bottom faster. So, yes it does help.

Yes.

Water got in your jars or the substrate was too wet. It's cooked BRF goo. Just dump them out and do those over with fresh substrate. You might try using rubber bands around the jars to keep water from getting up into them. It's usually only the bottom layer that does this.
I'll give you 5 shrooms for actually noticing that rather than bitching about it weeks later when it causes problems. Way to be observant.

Also try pushing in your tin foil to the point where you see indents where your holes are. That, making the side tighter, and a rubberband will ensure this crap doesn't happen again.
Also, if your restarting, why not do 12 jars? Doesn't 60-180 dried grams sound nice? Thats about a years worth of tripping assuming your smart and space your trips out every couple of weeks, not to mention if you want to make more simply sell a few grams to your friends and you'll have enough substrate for 10 more grows!
God I love this hobby.
Also, if you want to get closer to that 180 dried grams, dunk, roll, and double end case! I know it sounds complicated and time consuming at first, but its the one of the simplest and most rewarding things you can do.

Actually, you make a good point, I don't know what rubberbands would do in all that heat. You may as well try, or find something else to fasten your tinfoil.
And no I wouldn't put more jars on top, you want the jar somewhat submersed in water and I'm not sure how sterilized they'd be on top of other jars, so just wait the couple hours out that you have to when switching jars. Just a reminder, when your done boiling one set of jars make sure you dump out all your boiling water and refill with some colder water, or your jars will crack from so much heat at once.

Oh my bad I didn't realise he was PCing- yeah that'd work. I could just see some problems doing that with a boiling pot of water.

Maybe someone else can help you because I don't know- but if you'd like to find out before you try on your jars, put a rubberband on something and boil it. See if it melts to that something, or melts off.

The rubber bands wont melt, but they will lose elasticity IME
If you have a thicker rubber band and double it up - you should be O K.

Rubber bands work great! They're only good for maybe two runs though. Then they loose elasticity and break. But hey, they're dirt cheap, just buy a bunch.
