swearing
    #5852369 - 07/12/06 08:50 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

not cuss words type swearing, but more along the lines of "I swear by God/heavens/my life etc etc..."

any reason not to? any reason to swear? or why do people swear in the first place? I don't get it.

this whole subject confuses me, my mind just goes blank when I consider why people swear.

"I traveled a long way seeking God, but when I finally gave up and turned back, there He was, within me! O Lalli! Now why do you wander like a beggar? Make some effort, and He will grant you a vision of Himself in the form of bliss in your heart." -the saint of the Kashmir Shaivism tradition: Lalli.

I guess swearing is kind of like a promise...
I don't know why people make them or why people break them.

I swear in this context more often than I'd like to out of bad lingual habit.

I think its bad because, obviously as I have just revealed, it might communicate something to someone I did not intend to.

people do it to emphasize that they mean what they are saying. for example, if someone said they'd call you and they didn't you might not have much against them, but if someone swore they would call you and then they didn't you would have reason to be upset with them. its basically giving someone you're word and thus if you dont follow through, it dimishes the value of your word.
