stick to your 5 inches. that is a good depth.
you can go as deep as you want, I guess.
you will not grow 48 inch mushrooms though.
that 24 inch deep whatever could make about 5 seperate 5 inch whatevers.
those 5, 5 inch units will produce for you more than that 1, 24 inch unit would.

in my experience at least a few mushrooms are always double that of the substrate... why couldnt a 4 foot mushroom be possible?

well sure anything is possible, look at those giant pumpkins they grow at the fair... there's no doubt you'll get some bigguns out of it but 4 feet is probably not realistic... there's lots more practical and efficient things you can do with your spawn is what they're getting at. but hell if you wanna go for it, go for it.

I would love to see a picture of a four foot cubensis.
two I've seen before, but four...
good luck on that, but I too don't think it will happen.

for the same reason you don't see 20 foot tall humans.

Two feet of substrate would go anerobic in the core due to no air getting in, and rot. 8" seems to be about the maximum you can go with consistant success, but it better be loose and airy if you're going that deep. RR

Once you see pins forming just keep covering them with more and more verm. The mushrooms should keep growing allot longer than normal. I have seen pics of b+ growing massive fruits this way. But 4 foot I think is way to much.
