I'm afraid to shave again.
    #5851356 - 07/12/06 04:35 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Every time I shave my skin gets irritated and I get these ugly zit looking razor bumps all under my chin and jawbone.  It hurts like hell and I don't know how to prevent it.  I've used all types of razors, I currently have the new Fusion (non-vibrating) razor and the first time went awesome, but every time I use it I get the same problem.

What the hell should I do because it's really just starting to rediculously piss me off.  What balm works?  Before or after?  Please!  Save my face!

Dude.......for Gods sake man buy yourself an electric shaver and use the trim setting. That way you get a nice bit of gentle stubble and no cuts.

I do have one and it rips the hairs out and hurts even more than a razor. My skin needs to grow some balls and quit being so sensitive.

Seriously, if you get a close shave, dont shave the next two days. if you have sensitive skin you will get cuts and razor bumps and its ucks, but you already know this.

I have the same problem, and to prevent it, i shave every other day, sometimes i wait three days.

I have very tough hair growth, Its like cutting steel wire so i know what im talkig about.
Make sure you wet your beard with hot water to soften it up, then lather it good. I massage in the shaving foam then i go to town and make sure to rinse the razor often. I prefer the Gillette Mach3 model.

Usually the skin gets used to shaving so the more you do it the easier it will get. Also shave every day since it gets harder the longer you let it grow. You shouldnt have to use any force, just once smooth motion or you are doing it wrong or have a dull blade.

Personally I love a clean shave and an electric razor just doesn't do it for me.

Until recently I had the same problem as you with "ugly zit looking razor bumps" but I find that applying less pressure and just going over the same areas more times gives you a nice clean shave minus the bumps

hope this helps.

edit: also a good shaving cream or lotion helps (stay away from the cheap stuff in every situation) :gethigh:

Cool I'll give that a shot. I also try to use warm/hot water first. It feels like its a smoother shave when my pores are open.

Two simple fixes.

1) Soak a towel in hot water for a few seconds. Ring it out, lie down and let it sit where you're gonna shave. It'll make the skin more supple and it'll help raise the hairs.

2) Witch hazel. Dribble some into your hand, splash unto face like aftershave. I used to have the same problem as you and this stopped it cold.

http://www.labseriesformen.com/templates...UCT_ID=PROD9330

This stuff is really great to use when shaving with a razor(i use fusion). It doesn't eritate my face and it has a bunch of stuff in that makes shaving feel good. It actually has benzocaine in it with makes your face tingle and feel slightly numb so shaving doesn't hurt at all. I love it.

Especially creamy formula softens and preps beard to prevent irritation and redness.

Softens even the toughest beards.

Contains Benzocaine to condition and comfort, and aloe and caffeine to reduce irritation and promote renewal.

Fragrance free. Oil free. Great for sensitive skin

It sounds like whatever you are using has either a dull blade or just shitty construction.

Get a decent Braun shaver, they're well made. German machining FTW.

$20 a pop tho?  Possibly if it's big enough.  What's 8oz compare to?  I used to have this stuff from Avon a female friend bought for me...it worked wonders.  It was weird though; it was really watery, not balmy at all.  Thanks for the comments

I use colgate menthol shaving cream. My cheeks and face are cool with razors but it's the side of the jawbone and underneath part that kills. It really doesn't matter how long I wait between shaves; it always happens.

really? it's what they used to uise... read that article for sure... I'd say get a brush and some of that shaving cream that goes with it... and MAYBE the old style double edge razors (it explains why in the article)

i havent shaved in a fw months... but i have to stay clean shaven for work... i've just been waiting for them to realize that i'm one of the 4 people (out of like 70) who NEED to stay clean shaven (for wearing a mask, durring dangerous spill cleanups, that never happen)

I feel your pain brother. Shaving is such a pain in the ass. Sometimes, I used to rip my face up so badly that it looked like I had leprosy.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Develop a two-part shaving system. On one day shave with the Fusion razor and shaving cream. On the next day shave with the electric razor.

2. When your facial hair is getting somewhat pronounced, shave with the razor.

3. When your facial hair is very short (only a day since your last razor shave) shave with the electric razor. Never do a razor shave when your facial hair is real short. You end up ripping up your face.

4. When you shave with the razor, shave in the shower. The warmness makes for a smoother shave.

I get the same shit with razor, tis why I only use the long hair beard trimmer thingy on the electric shavers, as other people have mentioned.

But warm water followed by good shaving cream and some really expensive aftershave helps too.

(Might have to look into this bumpstopper stuff)

That was some good advice. I think i'm gonna have to go and get me a beaver brush. And I always tried to wash my face with warm water before but I'll try too place as much emphasis on this step as they do in that article from now on. I don't think im ready for a double or straight razor though, I'm a fairly careless shaver. I go for speed not precision.
