    #585065 - 03/21/02 08:40 AM (22 years, 13 days ago)

What can i say, the picture says all

300 ml white rice combined with 400 ml of water sterilised for one hour and inoculated with 10 ml of mycelial suspension. Although the results are prelimenary this looks very, very good
This jar was inoculated just 10 days ago !!!

Are those sclerotia Im looking at?(small) If they are after 10 days, I would say thats amazing. If there not, they sure look like them.
Is 10 days a usual time for these being so productive?

Interesting, how potent per weight is sclerotia compared to fruit weight?

By weight they are roughtly potent as cubes. they are about 30% dry matter, compared to mushies at 10%.

Una i believe they are stones of course, they look great. They appear unusually white compared to ones ive seen with all kinds of colours and textures. Is this because they are young?

new growth of sclerotia is white, they turn yellow/brown when they age. You can use this to determine wether jars are still producing new stones or if growth has halted. The rice isn't pre-cooked, i used a one-step process. The substrate isn't shakable but that doesn't matter since inoculation is done with a liquid.
The jar is capped with a tyvek filter hold in place with two rubber bands.

Here's a pic of older sclerotia on grass seed, as you can see they have a different colour.

I'm not surprised at all. Liquid inoculation is the way to go in my opinion, especially when using isolated strains.

Looks great though! I plan on trying this myself when I get that mexi print from you Una.

yeh thats what im talking about. i will definately be getting a print of these from una soon. first time i saw those things growin, I was like"is that normal or contamination?" they were harvested off of rye grass seed and determined to be 'clean' and uncontaminated by bacteria, fungi. Dried and store nicely. If they dry out they need to beground in coffee grinder. They taste good, relatively.

related question to sclerotia..

Is it easier to consume using just the rice substrate?
At some point I will try growing this. I have read workmans
research with rye grass seed..and others comments on the
"effects". Seeing this white rice alone, it seemed like it
would be "less crunchy" and more palatable without the
grass seed. Comments on the crunch aspects anyone?

Since the substrate doesn't usually get incorporated into the sclerotia, you can clean off any clinging seeds. Imagine the sclerotia like a potato growing in the ground. Its not full of dirt. One thing you should avoid is vermiculite since it sticks tenaciously to the surface of the sclerotia and is very difficult to remove. If you don't mind eating a thin golden coating on the sclerotia then its not an issue.

Una's images are of the "A" strain featured here.
http://www.sporeworks.com/mexicana-sclerotia.html

The results on rice are truly amazing. I need to try it myself, although I may use brown rice. Keep up the good work Una!

No they will not be 'crunchy'. Also like workman said, there will not be any rye eaten. The 'stones' will be equally good/edible on rice or rye. they grow between the substrate, and therefore dont have grains stuck in them.(except maybe a couple) Vermiculite will make them unpleasant to consume. Otherwise they are nutty tasting with a lemony flavor too. If they are not consumed fresh, they will get very hard(like rock) and need to be ground up with a good coffee grinder.

Una, I saw in a previous post that you did not have any luck with filter patch bags and the invitro strain. What exactly happened did they just not form? I have some of the A-mex on the way from sporeworks now but I did want to use bags so I am wondering what exactly you experienced that made you go with jars.

I was thinking if the bags are not forming sclerotia it could be because they dont have a solid edge to 'push' against like the glass jar? Maybe if you stuck a bunch of bags together in a plastic bin where they could 'push' against eachother? Anyway just a thought.

we are working with the A-strain on rice-grasseed mix in filterbags...this works absolutely great....colonisation takes less then 10 days and then scleros start to form....anyway..a great strain
