Cakes like their space?

About three weeks ago, I posted news of my cousin Vinny’s first mycelium. He was very excited and grew ever more impatient with every day. He understood that patience was a big factor in mycology, and really held himself back. Today my cousin Vinny woke up to find his first set of tiny shroomies.. Not pins, they had the whole browning tip bit going on, and were mainly growing around the bottom of his cakes. He was so surprised and excited, he called me right up and asked me to post the following Q on shroomery. Vinny’s FC is an aquarium, and the cakes are sort of cramped in there, with maybe an inch and a half of space all around them to grow. Is this too tight? Should vinny rearrange his FC, maybe get a supplemental one? How much space do cakes like to have around them?

Usually, you want at least 2 inches of space between them. But 1 inch will work too, you will get some deformed mushrooms in this case though, but nothing to worry.

you can get a cheap and effective fruiting chamber (rubbermaid bin) for like 5 bucks.
but to answer your question, i usually space them about 2 inches apart, but his cakes are gonna be fine the way they are. id tell him not to worry about it

I see some pictures of people stacking their cakes. Is this benefitial in any way? Also, is there a special procedure to stacking cakes?

You can take some toothpicks to connect them and still leave a little fruiting space between the cakes. I have stacked when I just ran out of space, but lately I am doing a lot of invitro--which is almost effortless and has produced qiute well for me. GL.
