Safe enough protection?

My laptop came with Spy Sweeper, but when I went to college they told us to install different protection. For what reason I don't know, but I did install it though after my roommate got a virus on his desktop. Should, I delete my school's anti-virus protection and keep Spy Sweeper. I am currently at home and not living on campus next year, though I may need to plug in at the library.
I run both of them from time to time and basically just keep a couple Trojans that I delete. PC World says only to run one virus protection on your computer. Two has always been better than one, so until now I have avoided deleting one program.
I am a sorry excuse of an Information Systems major, but I am working on it.
Is there a better protection service for cheap? I honestly have never researched too much on how to protect my computer from attacks.

Well, lets get started.
Spy Sweeper is not an anti-virus program, it is anti-spyware, adware, and malware (which does include some viruses)......
Anti-Virus is to block certain viruses, and remove already existing ones. As far as i know you cannot run two live protection anti-virus programs at one time. You can however have different virus scanners, as long as more than one doesn't load whent he computer boots.
If your school provides you with free anti-virus software (i know mine does!!) then use it along with spysweeper, it will be good.
you may want to get spybot and ad-aware se free edition as well, as some pick up programs the others miss.

I've had Norton and Mcaffee and have always managed to get a virus somehow....
There's a program called Kaspersky Anti-Virus which has always gotten every potential virus and you don't need to renew your subscription to virus updates.
Kaspersky is kinda crazy on how often it checks for updates... like every 2 hours but you can adjust that. It seems like on certain machines Norton may be a bit strenuous on the processor at times but Kaspersky runs great and has protected me well. send me a msg if ya WANT to know more.

I have found that AVG, which is free and updates daily is sufficient protection for virus. Also common sense helps allot. Dont be opening random email attachments and such or programs that are not from trusted sources.
For spyware protection Ad-aware and Spybot seem to be sufficient. Also both free and updated regularly.

I looked into AVG and downloaded the free edition, thanks guys. Random emails always get deleted when they find my In box.
