Diet and Exercise Basics

There seem to be many questions on this forum about the basic precepts of losing/gaining weight.

Here are some great links to get you started:

Without a doubt, the best way to become physically attractive is to join the Church of the Subgenius.

But where does it tell them that faith in "Bob" will give them thinner thighs and a washboard stomach?

I'm curious, has anyone found shrooms or other psychedelics to be helpful in aiding weight loss?

I suggest the full on stress diet. Overwhelming stress that incapacitates is pretty good for losing weight.

best way to lose weight is to raise your metabolism, its not hard, but people get all rapped up on fat burner pills and gimmicks, that try to artificially raise your metabolism,

to keep your metabolism raised constantly, do constant cardio exercises, such as aerobics with an instructor or really all you need to do is run, run everyday for at least 10 minutes straight, which is easier said than done, also none of that weak stuff, I'm talking exerting yourself as much as possible, jogging won't do it, I recommend running from between 6-9 mph, nothing less, and continue to do that everyday for at least a good month,

Just my 2 cents. Most guys that work out have as much need for the cancer center to tell us how to get 'in shape' as we need a Longaberger consultant telling us how to decorate our house.

If you want to work out and look like some IT nerd, use the cancer center information, or the red cross, or whatever "heart healthy" stuff makes you feel good.

Most guys work out to be bigger, leaner, stronger and ripped. To do this, you must use weights. I'm not talking about the "do 50 10lb bicep curls! yay!" stuff, I'm talking about a well-thought out program designed to add maximum amounts of lean muscle while maintaining an understanding of your joints and how to keep them healthy.

Heres what I do, workout wise

M - Pushing muscles, pecs, delts and triceps.
T - Pulling muscles, lats, biceps and traps
W - Legs and Abs
Th - Pushing
Fr - Pulling

I spend my weekends doing distance hiking (15mi+ per day) with a 30 lb + pack on, so I'm not in the gym.

Here's how I do my weight training...

15 minutes of low intensity elliptical before lifting. I get my heart rate up to about 120bmp, which is lower than my "fat burning" rate, just enough so that the blood is pumping.

I then do 4-5 exercizes for the main muscles (pecs or lats), four sets of each, 8-10 exercises per set with about 90 seconds of rest between.

The assistor muscles, (delts, triceps, biceps) I do 2-3 exercises for each, four sets, 8-10 reps, 90 seconds rest.

You want to get as many "barely got it!"'s as possible. That LAST rep or two where you can barely move it and you use all you have to get the weights up, thats when you really build muscle.

Also, don't lift for more than an hour or you are just wasting time. After an hour, your levels of testosterone and growth hormomes begin to drop. Work out hard, work out strong, don't stand around ogling the gym sluts in spandex, then get outta there

After I lift, I chug a protein shake and then run for one hour at a high heart rate. This really gets your cardio performance up. I try to run at 155bpm(heart rate), I don't really care about speed when i'm in the elliptical, I just want my heart rate high for an hour.

I also do a few 15 minute stretching routines throughout the day. stretching is CRITICAL to being in FANTASTIC shape. The best way to learn to stretch? YOGA! Yes! A hard core body builder does yoga! You want to be HEALTHY, not just strong, and part of health is having muscular flexibility.

As for diet, well, thats not too hard either. Go to www.flexonline.com , log in to their fourums and read the bodybuilding diet. It's not hard to know what you should or shouldn't be eating.

And, of course, can't forget water. I try to drink a minimum of 6 liters of water per day, in this hot summer heat, I try to drink 8L (two gallons!!!) of water, every day. Stretch this out. Make the first thing you do in the morning be to drink one liter of ice cold water. STretch out, do some yoga, and you'll be ready to face the day. Do some heart-pumping activity in the morning and keep your body ready for the day

Feel free to ask any quesitons ya have

I agree, those who are already in decent shape, and want to take on an advanced bodybuilding regimen, would not use the basic exercise guidelines I linked to.

However, many of the posts I read here are written by those who are not familiar with exercise and weight loss, and these posters would not be ready to take on a bodybuilding regimen. (Thus "Diet and Exercise Basics.")

Meal supplments are fantastic! I usually drink two meal replacement drinks per day. My recipie;

1 cup 2% milk
1/4 cup lowfat vanilla yogurt
1 scoop whey protein isolate
1 bananna
1 scoop (20cc, the same scoop from the protein isolate) wheat germ
3 scoops oatmeal

Blend well. I only have the oatmeal in the mix in the mornings and before workouts. After my workout, I don't eat anything with a high gylcemic volume like oats.

In KOTT's thread, I posted my daily food intake, thats the way to really do it.

StickeyWater - 4lbs a week is great! I once lost a lot of weight, when I was younger, about a hundred pounds, and I did it safely while adding body strength and I did it in less than 5 months!

Basic things that keep me healthy:

I don't eat meat
I pay attention to what I eat
I jog every day
I drink water all day
I meditate

Although I do stress out easily, which is something I'm working on.

Nothing bad about meat, if you "Pay attention to what you eat". Fish and chicken are amazing for you!

Who cares if it's not necessary? Exercise isn't necessary either, nor is staying healthy. But this thread is about health, and staying healthy.

Meat is healthy, tasty, and cheap.

That's more than enough reason for me.

Fish provides me with protein, Omega-3 fatty acids, with virtually zero saturated fat since I eat it raw. Not to mention sushi is one of my great pleasures in life.

Chicken, when cooked properly, is also very tasty, extremely healthy, and incredibly cheap.

There are countless studies that show athletes who abstain from meat tend to lack iron and zinc. I can cite them, if necessary. I have a pretty extensive library of nutrition.

It is also true that non-animal based supplements are far more expensive.

I know this first hand also, I was a vegetarian for a while, but my athletics lead me to end that.

That, and I love meat. I will hardly ever eat red meat though. I mostly eat fish.
