So I went on a little hunt... Nothing too spectacular. The usual Agrocybe pediades or Agrocybe semiorbicularis (aka- rust spored Pans *YESSUP*), Panaeolus subbalteatus, Panaeolina foenisecii maire, Pisolithus tinctorius (Dead Man's Foot), Bovista sp. (puffball), various Coprinus, hundreds of Conocybes, a couple Agaricus sp., some pretty ice-white coloured mushrooms, and those damned Balloons!..... And then there was this nasty stuff...
I was looking about the ground and I noticed a few square feet of ground covered in some nasty looking gelatin-like, rot yellow, soggy looking growth. I poked at it and pieces of it were easily broken off, so i took two pieces. The underside is this weird fish tank algea green colour, rather than the puke yellow colour on top. I looked at numerous photos and descriptions of jelly type fungus but could not find a match.
Does anyone know what the hell this is? I'd give a description, but there is no stipe, no cap, no spores that I can find... Just this wrinkled gel stuff. The habitat was underneath some pine trees, with some ice plant near by, weeds and a bit of grass. Mostly moist soil that this was sitting atop. No distinct smell. Smells faintly of dirt. It does not bruise. And NO I WON'T taste this!
Sorry about the photo quality! One of these days I'll invest in a digi cam....

Probably...if you were to inadvertantly step on it.
More like "slip" balls.....

I was stepping on it! I didn't notice it at first because I was looking for something that looked like a mushroom, and this certainly did not!
I don't think you people are taking this seriously!
Come oooon, I want to know what this stuff is.... Looks like this ID may go the way of the Balloons. maybe I should send it to Workman and he can try to cultivate it! hahahaha.

I'm guessing some sort of Slime Mold.
It could also be a Jelly Fungus or some sort of Lichen.

Right Xmush, I read his description and thought to myself that sounds like dog vomit or cat vomit. Then I reached your post and went no further or father or whichever comes first.
Did not feel the need to read anymore.

Actually, I think you're onto something Dave! I was trying to recall what it reminded me of, and was thinking water- maybe at the beach? But now that you mention it, I have seen it in water! Just not ocean water, rather pond water. Furthermore, the area I found it is part of a lagoon reserve! Uhh, the lagoon is fed into by the ocean, hehehe... But yeah, I think it is infact, some sort of algea stuff that grows in water. Somehow, this dirt was a suitable environment for it.

The stuff you're thinking of in pond water is probably this:
http://www.bioremediate.com/lyngbya.jpg
It's Cyanobacteria, a photosynthetic bacteria that is similar to algae, but not algae.
