    #5845234 - 07/11/06 12:02 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Walked through my park today, found alot of little (tall) mushrooms, wierd changing rings on the lid, like brown in middle, then red, then yea. So im looking through just to check if they are edible or something and they (and alot of different ones in the park) look alot like Panaeolus subbalteatus. im almost positive they are!

wish me luck!

check back tommorrow.

anybody got any tips for picking in a gigantic field by houses?

Just be chill.  There will undoubtedly be other sorts of mushrooms growing about, pick some random ones and put them in a seperate bag, so if someone gets sketch and asks what you're up to, just say you're collecting wild mushrooms for study, as your hobby is mycology.  If you have a camera, tell them you are also taking pics.

People have not gone out of their way to inquire about my wanderings- I have spent a lot of time picking subbs in public areas.

As I am sure you are aware, you will also need to spore print each one if you are uncertain if they may be Panaeolina foenisecii maire or Panaeolus subbalteatus.

Sweet mushroomy dreams.

Wait, what do you mean bruising? Panaeolus subbalteatus rarely bruises blue. You can see it sometimes, if you pull the mushroom up and check the bottom of the stipe for any fuzzy white mycellium still intact- you may notice the bluing in that case.... But no need to squish it, you'll just crush all the mycellium and lose the bluing.

Yes, I am serious.  It is quite the chore.  :undecided:

But don't put it off or you will the chance to spore print.  Make SURE to keep each stem with each cap- put the cap down, and then choose the left or right side, to place the corresponding stipe with the cap.  Make sure to do it on the same side for each mushroom or you'll be all mixed up.

I've done this with literally hundreds of Pans.  It sucks.  Hehehehe...

Be gentle.

If you wish, bring a small cardboard box- shoebox will work. The mushrooms will be more protected in a box.

To tell the truth, I do not apply the etiquette of cutting the stems with these mushrooms. They are far too delicate, and they are plentiful. Cutting them means you will be more likely to break the stipe, and it also takes more time, which i prefer be quick in public areas. So I suggest you carefully pluck them out. Others may disagree with me. Don't pick the pins (baby mushrooms), and if they look bug eaten or old, leave em alone.

When you return home with your haul, any stem fragments that have become loose and detached from its' cap should be disposed of. Don't worry too much, just be gentle- try and keep the box steady while walking.

I find a shoe box filled with peices of broken toilet paper works well (tissues seem to stick, however toilet paper isnt so inclined)

I have also seperated that into four sections to avoid cross contamination of the different looking samples.

I like to walk around with a coffee in one hand and a paper bag from the same coffee shop in the other. Otherwise pretend you are on your cell phone and take a seat in the grass?
