Hey im doin a run using 25% BRF and 75% Rye flour as my flour half and verm for the other half as my substrate using Koh Samui as my strand. I plan on crumbling this over damp perlite and then casing. My post is for some advice on a really effective casing. I have used 1/2 peat soil and 1/2 verm with some calcium carbonate and gotten good results.. Im simply wondering is this the most effective? Please throw your advice at me! Thanks. -noleshroomer

I do not think there is a "most efficient" in the shrooming world. If there was a most effective we would all be using it. Just use what you have. Keep it simple.

As you already know 50/50 works and 50/50+ is even better. Straight verm works almost exactly the same. Lots of people like coir also.
Straight verm is my favorite.

Thanks decepticon, I checked that link out.. I guess the big issue is more PH than anything.. verm, coir, peat, and calcium carbonate mixed in any way that will give you 7.5 ph then I guess your shit is set. I dont know where to find litmus paper.. maybe home depot has a meter. Anyways, thanks guys.
Lastly there is one more thing I dont get though.. short term and long term buffer what the hell does that mean.. ? is that even important?

Limestone grit is a long term buffer. Hydrated lime, because it's powdered and water soluable is a short term buffer. What you want is a short term because the life of a casing is measured in weeks instead of months or years. Use hydrated lime to get the ph right at the start, and use gypsum at a rate of ten percent to the peat in your casing to prevent ph swings later.
Without ph strips, try using equal amounts of peat and verm. Add gypsum at the rate of one cup to each ten cups of peat. Add one teaspoon of hydrated lime to each cup of peat. Mix all the dry ingredients except the verm together, then moisten. Add moisture to the verm, then combine the two. Let sit for half an hour, then begin adjusting for field capacity. RR
