i tried my first wbs jars and they havent had any growth. i made them with the soak and simmer method. i made my own syrings out of my spore prints. the spores were good because i did a few cakes too and they are almost done. then i tried the soak method with the same batch of syringes. then i tried it with more water. then i tried it with less water. then i tried using my LC cult.every time i do 2 cakes with the jars i inoculate the wbs and what i have left over goes to the cakes. all the cakes are doing fine execpt one with contam. i used the wild bird seed from walmart that everyone says to use. i dont know what to do any more. i have lots of h/poo ready but i am waiting to pc until i can get some wbs.is rye berries harded to spawn? should i change to them? i have a total of 12 jars of wbs that are doing nothing and the oldest one is 20 days. they are in a incubator with my cakes at 84 deg . any one have this happen to them or what the heck am i doing wrong??

try taking them out of the incubator.
next time "incubate" at lower temperatures or out in room temperature. if the only difference is the substrate, that does sound weird.
try a birdseed without a coating on it. got to petco or something.
what is happening to the jars? why are they not working? do you see some wetness or slimeyness?
and I wouldn't pc your poo. pasteurize it when the time comes. why not try rye berries. they are not any harder than wbs.

It sounds like you got a batch of WBS with fungicide. They sometimes add it to increase shelf life. Go to a health food store and get organic rye berries, or at least try buying WBS from a different supplier. RR

Damn RR you brought up a point I might have been unaware of up until now. I didn't think about companies adding fungicide to do that... I need to go recheck my stuff.
Should it say on the package if fungicide was added to the mix? Would the soak for 24h with long rinse sessions cancle out the fungicide?

Since its not for human consumption they probably dont have to put that on the labeling.

Sounds like bactilus....
WBS is abit trickier then rye.
For one, WBS takes a longer soak time, 36 hours.
After you've soaked it, drain and rinse very well. Next, bring a pot of water to a boil and remove it from the stove and dump in your WBS. wait until the water cools and then drain and rinse well again.
Here is the importent part, let it strain for a good hour or two and then pat with a paper towel, you should not see water form on the paper towel, it may feel abit damp but thats ok of course. Next, pack your jars, use a 1inch hole for a polyfill filter or tyvek filter, place eletrical tape over the holes, make a tinfoil lid and now pc at 15psi for a hour and a half or two hours at 10psi.
Let cool, innoc and you should be good to go.
Open those WBS jars you have now and take a wiff. I promise you won't be disapointed It's all comes with experience.
