Sacred Garden in Mid July

Today I stopped by my sacred garden to look for chanterelles, and I was pleased to find they were just starting to come up. Most of my patches only had tiny pins, but in one of them the mushrooms were big enough to collect. I picked about one and a half pounds, enough for a batch of chanterelle and chicken white sauce over biscuits. Yummmmm!
 [Smooth Chanterelle Cantharellus lateritius]
There were plenty of other mushrooms out there. I saw lots of Inocybes, Psathyrellas, and Collybias. I also saw this neat Amanita button. I think it might be a grisette.
 [Amanita sp.]
I also found lots of Bolets, including this colorful fellow. I think this is the Red-cracked Bolet.
 [Red-cracked Bolet Boletus chrysenteron]
There were also quite a few of these tasty little guys.
 [Chestnut Bolete Gyroporus castaneus]
I named this spot the sacred garden because it is host to a substantial population of active Gyms. Today I happened upon a rare mid-summer fruiting. Someone recently requested a spore print from the Ohio bluing Gym, so hopefully this mushroom is not too far gone to drop a few spores.

Probably the most interesting find of the day were these Russulas. About half of them were being parasitized by a yellow fungus.

Could this be the beginning stage of lobster mushroom formation. I certainly hope so.

Wow, great finds and pics, thanks! Don't see any bluing in that particular gym though.

They only blue in the pin stage. I picked this mushroom from the same log two years ago.

By the time they mature they no longer bruise blue, and their potency falls through the floor. Arora uses the bluing reaction to distinguish Gymnopilus aeruginosus from Gymnopilus spectabilis in his key in Mushrooms demystified. So, when these mushrooms are young and bruise blue they key out as G. aeruginosus, but when they are older and don't blue, they key out as G. spectabilis. I suspect they are in fact a variety of G. spectabilis which is potent and bruises blue in the pin stage, but others disagree.
You can read about it here. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/2978781#Post2978781

Thanks inski. Playing with the flash and camera settings can bring out different colors in the mushrooms. That third picture really accentuates color variations in the chanterelles.
Yeah, it might also be a death cap. Grisetes are plentiful in the sacred garden, and I have never found a death cap there, so that's why I suspected Grisette, Amanita vaginata.
No new word on the bluefoots. I suspect that after Dr. Guzman takes a closer look he will confirm that they are P. caerulipes, but we will have to wait and see.

Very nice pics once again.
I'm not sure about that last one being a lobster host, there are other hosts that can grow on Russula mushrooms, the lobster usually being a orange-reddish color when mature at least.

I have only ever seen fully colonized orange lobster mushrooms like you noted, but the texture of this parasite seems similar to that of the lobster mushrooms. I'll have to head back out there in a few days to see how things have progressed.

My bet is that is a lobster mushroom parasite... however, Ive never found them!
I would definetly go check them out in a few days and see what happens! That would be awesome if they were!

Hey dan, nice finds, These are close to lobster mushroom (Hypomyces Lactifluorum), but are in fact Russula mold (Hypomyces Luteovirens). Edibility is not recommened according to Bessette.
Chants have been out in full force here in New Hampshire, And also trumpets have decided to make an early arrival. Picked and sold around 4 pounds of each.
