The war in Aghanistan finally hit home with me
    #5842411 - 07/10/06 01:15 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

A young woman I work with had to take leave today, her sister's fiancee is coming home wrapped in a flag.

Her dad is featured in this news story.

THUNDER BAY, Ont. — The latest Canadian Forces casualty in Afghanistan was disillusioned and desperate to leave the war-torn region.

That, according to Larry DeCourte — the father of the soldier’s girlfriend.

DeCourte says Cpl. Anthony Boneca expected to be on patrol in Afghanistan but didn’t expect to be in a fighting war.

DeCourte says the military didn’t provide the 21-year-old Boneca with the proper training and that the young man shouldn’t have been on the front line.

DeCourte says Boneca was so desperate to leave Afghanistan he considered telling an army priest he was suicidal so he could be discharged.

Boneca, a reservist from the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment in Thunder Bay, Ont., died Sunday following a firefight west of Kandahar City.

His tour of duty was to end in three weeks.

Two other soldiers were wounded in the same battle.

DeCourte says Boneca had given his daughter Megan a promise ring and was eager to come home and get on with his life.

Well its about time it hit home! Shits real! My buddy got back not to long ago. All he talked about was how you never know when its coming, you can get shot from 600+ meters away brains scrambled. He said you never know when a bomb will just blow up. It just happens.

He kept squinting his eyes. When they teach you to shoot they teach you to squint before you sight in and shoot. It helps focus the eyes. He just kept squinting talking how he is going back.

Yeah, we should not have any troops on the other side of the world, when our sovereignty is intact. Bring them home!
