Used substrate not colonizing compost, when should i give up?
    #5841584 - 07/10/06 07:21 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hey. I took some second flush casings and tried using them as spawn... its been about 3-4 days and i still just see the white chunks in the compost, with no colonization at all. Is this common with this method? When should i give up on it, and if i do, id imagine i can still use the compost with some other spawn? Thanks for any advice!

It's not going to work. Spawn needs to be aggressive and young. When mycelium fruits, it goes from the colonizing state to fruiting mode. After fruiting, it dies. You can't spawn a spent substrate to bulk and expect good results. They won't come.

Thanks a lot man, as usual.  :tongue2: Sounds like a damn shame... thin casings got the best of me! Cooking my first 3 LC baby bottles though! Hope to get this compost colonized with some jars then since this spawn isnt going to work... thanks again!

I have seen a lot of Teks that used spent substrate to start an outdoors grow. it should at least have some spores that have fallen onto it to start up again. No experience with this though just a suggestion.

Well they had a VERY small first flush with tiny 1/2 to 1 inchers. So i was hoping it wasnt spent beyond the point of using... but it seems to be... 1 or 2 small pieces of something look a little rhizomorphic, but nothing to make me think the whole thing will colonize... i may wait another day, then just mix in some fresh spawn... donno.
