How important is a casing?
    #584062 - 03/20/02 08:48 AM (22 years, 13 days ago)

How much does a casing really help with yields for P.Cubensis? I seem to have a lot better success avoiding contamination when I birth trays without adding a casing layer. My loss rate with casing is nearly 100% and I am wondering if I should continue trying to improve my techniques or just skip the casing altogether and stick to the noncased trays.

I am using a 1 inch 50/50 mix of coir/vermiculite sterilized for 1hr at 20psi on top of 4 inches of 100% colonized rye berries with a 1/4 inch of plain vermiculite on the bottom of the tray. Cobweb is the only contamination I currently have a problem with.

Here is my answer :
I harvest 20 shrooms from a cake (first flush) against 70 shrooms from a casing made with one cake (first flush). 50 shrooms gained just by casing (average) !
Keep on trying. You could try to put the same material on the top and on the bottom layer, so that you would be sure everything is sterilised (+ it's better than verm). Are you sure it's cobweb ? Sometimes, mycelium looks strange. If so, really clean your fruiting chamber.
Good luck !

Whenever my friend uses the coir and pressure cooks it he always gets the cobweb too but when he just pasteurizes it he never has any problems. Also peat-verm-lime mix works real well too.

peat+lime = jiffy mix !
I agree, it's perfect. I prefer it to coco.

I will have to try the pasteurization to see if it makes a difference over sterilization. If I do nothing, I get green and if I sterilize I get cobweb... maybe with pasteurization I will get "nothing" in between. Thanks for the input. If I continue to have problems, I will probably just switch back to 50/50 verm/peat. I hardly had any problems until I switched to coir, but I don't have a huge amount of casing experience.

I sterilized & got cobweb, too. But I'm thinking I may have stored my sterilized casing wrong. I'm casing with Jiffy Mix. I'm planning on sterilizing in 1/2 pints and storing unopened until needed as my next plan of attack.
Update this thread after you try pasteurizing - I'd like to know the results.

I don't really know anyone who grows mushrooms. I just come here for fun.

I too, had no luck with casings. All got contaminated with the dreaded green and cobweb molds.

This last batch, I mixed around 2 parts Dr. Bluethumbs' compost to one part grain. So far I have had zero contams. I will never go back to casing! No fruits yet (2 weeks since transfer), but rapid colonization. Will let you know the results in a few weeks.
