I have a summer job as a manager at a pool. i work for a company that hires lifeguards and managers for private condo pools. My pool was supposed to open July 1, and for the end of June i was filling in at another pool as manager. Did those days, got paid, but July 1 comes along and the pool where I am supposed to be manager 5 days a week has not opened because of 2 missing words in an insurance contract.
My company has tried to fill me in at other places if people are sick, but that has only been the case once. Its not opening tomorrow (monday) either. i am beginning to seriously detest my days off.
Basically, I am flat broke right now, and I am going to be spending the next semester of school in the Czech Republic, and will want to do some travelling to Italy, Germany, Amsterdam, and take other little trips that come up. I will also need money for food and general living expenses.
So, when i landed this job, i calculated how much money i'd be making this summer, and was a good amount. not a ton of money, but definitely enough spending money for the whole semester and some of the spring.
this whole fiasco has cost me in the upwards of 500 dollars so far. my company is just as surprised and upset as i am, and continues to try to find me places to work as a fill-in, but its not good enough. Im losing a shitload of money, and money that is more important than usual.
what would you guys do? theyre getting a serious phone call from me tomorrow, ive been nice about it so far, but tomorrow im going to lay it down that this is not my fault, that i was hired as a manager and that was under the impression i would be working and making money. i will threaten quitting, which would actually hurt the company slightly, i believe. i know from past discussions that they want to avoid my quitting.
so anyway, im basically going to tell them that i need to be compensated for this money i lost. but i know theyll say i didnt work so i cant get paid, and that they hate this just as much as i do. its the pool board members who messed this up, not my company.
what would you guys do?

I honestlythink you're about shit out of luck. I really doubt they'll compensate you for those days.
I would look into finding another job asap.

Find another job. If you are working on an as-needed basis you are obviously not needed right now, even though you would be had it not been for their insurance fuckup. They won't compensate you for work not done.

Seriously, look for another job and let your employer know you're doing it. It's okay to say "I need money, and if you won't put me to work, I need to find someone who will," They'll understand, and maybe even make you an offer to retain your spot.
