Thank you! Was just a little confused about the subject. I guess they can smell just about anything down to a piece of dirt :p

I bet a good lawyer could beat those charges. It's impossible for a dog to smell and indicate on something it hasn't been trained to smell for. As far as I know dogs aren't trained to smell for shrooms.
The dogs are just a bullshit excuse to violate your rights. They are very sensitive to what their handler wants them to do. If the cop wants the dog to bark and indicate on a vehicle it will, no matter what it does or doesn't smell.
When they find nothing, as they often do, the cops can just blame the dog. They can't bust a dog for being a dirty cop, so nobody ever gets in trouble for this practice.

You know what I always wondered? Why don't smugglers use chilli powder to fuck up sniffer dogs.
That stuff puts any dog out of commission for at least 5 min.
I guess it would look pretty suspicious if you walked by and a drug dog started convulsing...
or is there anything you can carry/secretly spray that would numb the dog's nose without him having such a noticeable reaction?

I know a guy whose drug dog is named "Sheebah"
I bet most of the time those drugs (pills, shrooms, etc) were found because the dog smelled the pound of weed the people also had

I would find it difficult for the dog to actually smell psilocybin/psilocin--I mean, they smell like mushrooms. I could see maybe smelling extracted psilocin/psilocybin... but, otherwise I think the point would be moot.
Totally agree that they just happened upon the mushrooms in the line of sniffing for something else, unless they're actually trained to call on them in traffic stop settings? Possible, I just don't really see that happening.

I thought dogs were able to smell only 1 kind of drug each... but that second article kinda states otherwise... it did state pot and money... but lots of times money could smell like pot especially if you crush weed in it
I am going to do a little googling

I know for fact that drug dogs are trained to smell out money. I knew someone who had the dogs smell out a wad of cash under his mattress. It was fresh from the bank and he had nothing else in the house.
They tried to hassle him about the cash (only $500) saying the dog smelled it out and such.
They can train the dogs to smell out anything. But I think it would not work to train them to smell for mushrooms because they would be smelling out regular mushrooms, which would mean that the dog indicating would NOT be probable cause since he was trained to smell out legal things also.

I have heard a state patrol claim his k9 could detect mushrooms. I had none in my car so I have no clue if it is REALLY true.

> They can train the dogs to smell out anything.
This is not true. One can train a dog to smell out anything that a dog's nose can detect. Not everything has an odor that a dog can smell.
> I know for fact that drug dogs are trained to smell out money.
As do I. I have trained a dog (austrian shepherd) to smell out money and cannabis. It is a clever way to see how good the dogs are and very easy. If you can train a dog to sit, you can train a dog to smell out a substance.
> I thought dogs were able to smell only 1 kind of drug each...
Close. They do not cross train dogs to detect both explosives and drugs. A dog will be trained to detect one or the other. Drug dogs are trained to go nuts when they detect drugs while bomb dogs are trained to freeze when they detect a bomb. It wouldn't be good for a drug dog, trained to sniff out bombs, reverting to going nuts when he discovers an explosive rather than freezing.
However, within each group, the dogs will be trained to detect multiple substances. A drug dog might be trained to detect meth, cannabis, and cocaine all three. The dogs must be trained to detect each substance. They don't magically know the smell of a random drug they have never seen before.
