And seen and remembered this, I wondered if maybe this was the start of a chicken of the woods?

I would like to see the pores to know for sure. What color is the underside? Looks a bit shiny for a chicken to my eyes, but it could just be the flash. Other wise it looks kind of close.

Looks awfully chickeny, but, it should have a white spore print, not orange. What color are the pores?

It looks about right to me.. I find these all of the time. Mine are much more orange red though. What is the flesh like on the inside when you break a piece?
They way that they look can be very variable.
I have found both the white pore chicken of the woods and the yellow pore version. The white pore ones are so much better tasting I think, better texture too. My yellow pore ones were growing straight off of dead, fallen wood, but most white pore ones that I find were growing at the bases of living trees.
Check some pages on them out for yourself.
Here is one that I created, it has a link to Tom Volk's chicken of the woods page - http://www.shroomery.org/wiki/pmwiki.php/Hunting/LaetiporusCincinnatus

Eris I find the white pored one too, var. cinncinnatus or mabye even a different species according to the Thom Volk link. I haven't tried one yet, but I think I will now, especially after seeing your pics of one fried up!

They are one of the best edibles, I highly suggest trying them. I let my girlfriend and family have some before and they loved it!

Forgot to mention - you have to cook them well before eating, as sometimes undercooked specimens cause stomach upset.

That might be best. It's hard for us to always give an accurate identification over the internet. Whatever we say should just be used as a starting point for you to work from. It would be different if they were in my possession.
What kind of paper are you printing them on? Dark? Light?
I'm kind of cunfused because you have changed spore print color twice now.
