I know for a fact there are a huge amount of Shroomerites out there who don't use drugs. Some never have, some choose not to.
What's your story? Why don't you use drugs....or why DO you use drugs? I'm especially curious to hear people's stories about why they choose not to.

I've decided to hold off on psychedelics because school was always something I focused on when I trip, and it can cause me a great deal of anxiety. Sooooo that's my deal.

Um okay? I thought you have to atleast like shrooms to be a shroomerite? Of course I do them. I use drugs because I enjoy being high on them, I am drinking some vodka mixers now too, yes I like alcohol too, which is still a drug, but some people dont classify it as one, even known it is highly addictive and just as dangerous as a lot of drugs.

Whenever I get high, it always seems like I'm putting the drugs and its effects before my personal life and the people in it. It doesn't always end up effecting them, but I feel that it could have, and thats enough for me to just not do it.
My girlfriend and family come before me being high and/or drunk.

well i only do certain drugs.
I havent ever touched cocaine or any of its bastard children, or opiates. This is beacuse i see lots and lots of people that use these, just letting their lives go to hell in a handbag. not that there arent responible users. i just dont want to tempt it.
and i dont roll anymore, because you cant find a single pill thats pure.

I don't use drugs because they were screwing up my life. I was a mess for quite a while. I was sober for 4 years and just recently broke that streak with some white blotter.
It was different this time. I actually appreciated it. I had no expectations, and was in a famillar awe with the enviroment around me. It was beautiful. I might not touch it again for another 4-5 years.

No actually you don't. The only requirement for someone to be a shroomerite is that you are over the age of 18. Seriously.
There are hundreds of shroomerites out there who don't use mushrooms or any kind of drugs and plants to get stoned. Why is that so hard to beleive?

OMG..it is called moderation, any drug is bad if you use it too much, but if you use drugs in moderation, it is no big deal.

If you don't count weed, I do the occasional mushrooms and xanax jag nowadays, but nothing like I used to do. They just sort of lost their glamour, I suppose.

I don't know. Marijuana is perfectly fine, until the abuse starts. If someone is smoking massive amounts constantly, some temporary damage can be done. Weed can be used in moderation as nothing more than a kind of natural medicine, but at the same time it can be abused to the point of it being a drug.

I can never get enough marijuana. It works better than any medication I've ever had for my anxiety. Xanax just made me go "LE DRRRRR"
And I'll be fucked if they're putting me on any SSRI's.

I need to quit drinking though. I always end up getting way too drunk, which leads to cocaine half the time.
It's hard when all my friends are going out everynight and getting wasted.

i've nearly stopped smoking weed because i was getting paranoide and it simply fucked me up and made me question EVERYTHING too much (and i didn't have enough energy to deal with that on a daily basis)
i smoked a few times over these past seven months since i gave it up... some were GREAT and some were pointless but all in all it's much better for me not to be smoking daily...
as for shrooms... i STILL haven't had a full blowen expiriance so i dunno...
other then that i don't use any other drugs (for now anyway... someday i'd like to try other psychodelics depending on how much i'll like mushrooms or what effect they'll have on my mental well being!)
i guess the only drug i've tried and don't really want to try again is N2O which freaked me out a little... i'll probably do it sometime in the future when i feel more grounded but not in the near future
i did a baloone when i was peaking on a low dose of mushrooms and it made me feel the MOST alive and "in the moment" i've EVER been... it was a good feeling but after that i started questioning my life to the point where everything felt moot and pointless so i figure i'd better not get into that right now untill i'll have some ground to go back to... something to live for (some direction to my life)

I do drugs because they work FOR ME! Most of my friends are not so lucky. However I am self-employed so it is not in contention for my work time/efforts. Cocaine I do NOT dop anymore because it is too expensive and after the first few times became really awful and unpleasant instead of inspiring. Cudos to anyone here who does what is right for them.

I love magic mushrooms but my first and last trip using Psilocybe azurescens gave me terrible pain in my kidney region and made my hair fall out!!!  I kid you not! I've still got a good head of hair but it's a hell of a lot finer than it was before!
I still might try Liberty caps again (Psilocybe semilanceata) as I've never had a problem with them before but still feel cautious after the azurescens experience!
Smoked weed for years and enjoyed it but one day I just snapped, can't smoke the stuff without getting panic attacks/paranoia now so don't do that anymore.
Coke - love the stuff but what a waste of money. Seriously rots the cartilage in your nose and makes you more prone to heart problems...
MDMA - Love the stuff every once in a while but feel down for days after taking it.
Opium - flushed a 1/4 ounce of the stuff down the toilet last night. I liked it too much and didn't want to turn into a junkie!
Salvia - that stuff just gives me a headache!
Amphetamine sulphate - had many a one night stand ruined due to it shrinking my dick!!! No more!
LSD - The stuff I get in Europe sounds ways stronger than the shit you guys get in the States. The experience lasts for about 12 hours and is a complete and utter head-fuck with a long recovery time... Not for me!
I just like chilling with a cig and some booze now. I hate the way some people react to booze, violence and stuff but it just makes me calm and talkative.

..hey I would do some meth every once in a while, but I still get drug tested, if I wasnt getting tested I would....as long as I had some weed too, I would do more then a little if I did meth anyway....but I prefer coke over meth though.

Caffeine, alcohol, and pot are the only drugs I use anymore. I`m giving up the first two after the summer is over. I occasionally slip up and binge on an opiate (seems to about about every 6 months) but I am progessively getting better at staying completely away from them.
Mushrooms got repetitive for me, and I`ve seen so much shit go wrong while on them that it is hard for me to not be influenced by negative anticipation.
I love LSD, but it lasts too damn long and I need at least 36 hours including a full 8 hours of sleep to recooperate after a solid trip. Pot is perfect...I was a wreck before I started smoking, it has helped me physically and mentally so much that I can`t imagine life without the influence it has had on me. I can still quit smoking for long periods though and the impact remains, similar to the effect after a nicely assimilated trip.
LSD and pot are the only substances that appeal to me for entheogenic purposes, perhaps mecaline. Drinking seems to be good when you get that craving to simply get fucked up sometimes, but the day after is pure shit if I overdo it.

Drugs were never negative for me. I didn't use them until I was an adult. They make my life better, not worse. I didn't use my favorite, drug, acid, until I was 27 years old and had spent 5 years learning about its properties. I do consider nicotine and marijuana drugs. I don't smoke and I hardly ever smoke pot. Tripping is what I do when it comes to drugs.

Very interesting thread.
For me the reason is that, althought I love the psychedelic experience it creates too much anxiety for me after a hard (I don't like to call them bad) trip, and guess what kind of trips do I usually have?
I just now use it as a tool in very concrete moments, but no more than once a year, twice at most. That's for psychedelics.
I don't smoke or drink a lot, even tho lately I've been drinking more when in parties, and coke or opiates aren't usually in my menu, maybe once or thrice a year, but not even that in the last 2 years.
However, even if I don't take that much drugs per se, I like people who are intelligent, creative, fun and above all BS-free.
That's why I still keep coming here, I still haven't found a nicer community of people in all my life, and I mean it: Several shroomerites have stayed in my house for as long as a week and every one of them was one seriously cool motherfucker

I am currently not using body drugs, because i felt like they were getting in the way of life.
I spent a good 7 years fucking around with everything, and it wasn't that i was addicted, it was just that i realized that i was spending all my time thinking about drugs.
So i'm on break for a year... well i broke it for a certain vacation, but i intended to do that from the beggining.
And i don't consider psychedelics drugs, so i can still do those. And theres no way i'm gonna stop drinking...

i am a liberal, laid back kind of person, always up for a laugh and try not to take life too seriously hence pushing the bounderies of my existance every now and again.
fortunately i dont have an addictive personality and am able to try many types of drugs without ever loosing focus on my ambitions in life. i think as long as you can mantain your goals in life then why not dabble in a bit of this or that every so often. you only live once so why not?

well i use to do drugs for more than half my life but there is a time where all the wrong people bring you down and you want more than to be poor and high all the time. i wasted too many years being high . also i lost to many friends to the same stuff that i was in to and i will never see them again because there dead .now i only do it maybe 1-4 times a year any more than that and i am afraid that my addiction will grab ahold again.

befor i started smoking heavely (and it wasn't nearly as heavy as some people do) i'd probably talk the same as you and boom but no more! weed has the potential to fuck with you and should defently be approched with respect... where alcohol can cause a big headache and some puking (besides fucking your liver and all that) weed can fuck with your mental state which can sometimes be devestating to some people (espacialy if they don't have the tools to deal with that kind of state!)

food is a drug. lots of peopel use food the same way others use drugs. bad food too. it leads to health problems and gross obesity

I think of psychedelics more as tools, not just a "drug." I can't deny how my life/mind state has improved since I started using them. I feel so dramatically different since I started tripping. Shrooms, LSD, mescaline...I love them all. I can see myself getting to a point where I'm not tripping as frequently, but I suspect I'll always be a tripper for life.
Unlike most people here, pot is what I'd like to cut back on. But I'm always wanting to cut back on the pot (as she loads a vaporizor bowl  ).

I think as long as you are using it as a 'tool' it's no longer a 'drug'. Mind you, the government wholeheartedly disagrees with that sentiment...
Everyone has different ideas, different perpectives and different motivations. Wether you use, or you don't use....do you know why? Or is that just the way that it is? Do you choose to use? Or is it just available and convienient? Do you choose not to?
I choose not to. (save for one recent experience being the first in 4+ years)

yeah i totally agree!
weed isn't that enjoyable to me unless it helps me in some way... just sitting around doped is ok but that'd often make me start to think about things and get tangled up and paranoide
where as when i'm dancing, playing music or learning something i find it really helps!
it loosens me up and makes me focused on a specific task!
that's why i don't complitly right it off... i just have to listen to my instincts and only toke when it has a good perpuse!
as for mushrooms... i have many reasons to explore that path and only after i find out all i can i'd be able to make up my mind on how and if i want to keep doing them!

For me...it started as an act of curiousity, plus a dash of "escape from reality."
Why I use now...to keep myself from getting too comfortable in my own life. It's a way of lifting my blinders and noticing what I've been missing, oftentimes right in front of me all along. Psychedelics are like magnifying glasses for my soul. Sometimes it's hard to see what's there...but I have to look anyway. It's a way of facing the fear of both life and death. I like to challenge it.

I'm schitzofrenic, found out a few months ago, Im only allowed to drink now, but I hit the occasional doobie now and then. If it were up to me, I'd keep smoking pot, but I stay clear of it for my family, I put them through alot when I went insane; whole buncha cop shit, hospitalization and whatnot, they just don't deserve that again.

I'm one of those weird "on the fence" people. I have no problem with people engaging in recreational drug use. And, there are certain substances that I will do. But, most substances are just not enjoyable for me anymore.
If someone shoves Special K or cocaine in front of my face at a party then I'll do it. I like the high that those two drugs give. But, I would only do those drugs maybe once or twice a year...if that.
I no longer like the highs of marijuana, psychedelics, or opiates. They just aren't fun or the side-affects are so bad that it makes them not worth it anyway.
And that's where I am with drugs. I've probably told that story about a million times in the Pub when people ask with shock "why are you on the Shroomery if you don't do drugs?".
I do like alcohol though.

For me psychedelics bring reality into a clearer focus. Whatever has been bothering me gets worked out and I emerge from my trips healed. At the same time, taking acid is an incredibly enjoyable experience.
At the same time, I think if I started using drugs much earlier I wouldn't use them in the same way. Studying drugs on alt.drugs and then on the Lycaeum and the Shroomery when they were formed and participating in discussions allowed me to use drugs in the most positive way possible when I was ready. (I've actually used the Shroomery since its first year but I didn't decide to post until a couple of years ago).

Cannabis use had a way of introverting my thoughts, and thats something I can't stand. I like to communicate, but it gets too difficult when I'm high.

You're one step ahead of me , I won't say pot is bad, because I had too many good times while high, but I think I should have not done it in my younger years, its something for adults not kids, when your a teen your brain is still in an important development stage.

I've become too afraid of ordinary existence because of psychedelics. Something a lot bigger you, me and anything we can conceive of is going on and its very frightening for me to think about. I don't plan on taking psychedelics again until I can work myself back into a more comfortable mental space.

 , yeah ordinary existance is not easy to handle, but unfortunetly its always there unless you end your life, which is not an option for myself, so the best thing you can do is keep moving  . Oh How i enjoyed mind altering experiences, but im slowly finding new, more natural ways to alter my mind, its not easy.

I really can't see how people can not call psychedelics and weed drugs. A drug is a chemical substance that affects the central nervous system, it's that simple. So yes weed and psychedelics are drugs.
I don't see any negative meaning in the word drug. I think you have been conditioned to see the word drug in a negative way, and that's why you don't want to call the drugs you like drugs.
I like altering my central nervous system from time to time, so yes I do and like drugs.

I was thinking about taking up programming, I always liked scripting with mirc, so I think I may like C++.
Haha im not big on doing intense things like that, but someday sky diving would be awsome.

I do anything and everything.
Basically, if I can watch you do it and not suffer severe side effects, then I too, will do it.
I have no issue with the straight-edge and tend to admire their tenacity.
I am more concerned with the state of mind; opened or closed.

I've used meth several times in moderation. I don't find any appeal in benders.
I've also mainlined heroin from time to time, and smoked crack. The only thing (beyond the dozens of "research chems" that i just haven't been around) that i haven't done so far is PCP. The major reason for that is i'm prone very prone to injury.

I began trying drugs as an experiment in self control. My father was an alcoholic, and a chain smoker. I'm pretty sure my sister [1] is an alcoholic. I didn't understand how they could get so dependent on a substance to live their daily lives.
So for an experiment when i was 15, i tried smoking. In about 6 months i worked myself up to about half a pack a day, and then decided to quit. I didn't see the problem. I got awful headaches for about a week. They went away. To this day i haven't had another cig.
I've done similar experiments since then with alcohol, weed, x and heroin. Most recently, i did meth a few times a week for two months. On those days, i wouldn't sleep. I'd just be super productive. Heroin was by far the worst coming off. They don't kid around about withdrawal. I could see why you would stay on it. But not why you would do it frequently enough to bring that upon yourself. No fucking thank you.
I guess maybe i just don't enjoy drugs enough to get hooked on them. Or maybe i just think that addiction is too pathetic to ever partake in.
Either way, mushrooms are my favorite. That's why i'm here. They're everything that i thought weed would be when i first tried it. They make you see the importance of every insignificant thought and object, as well as the hilarity buried within that very same insignificance. I like to do them anytime that i'm starting to take myself, this government, the world, and the human condition too seriously. When I trip, i'm reminded of why i shouldn't.

I didn't really check out drugs until 24ish.
And when I do I generally do them alone. And read Wikipedia. Watch Cosmos.
I do drugs to better understand my own brain, my own situation, my friends. My enemies. Where I'm going and where I've been. My goals, dreams and everything else.
