edit: my wife posted some more pictures of the puppy furthur down the thread... enjoy!
On Friday afternoon, one of my wife's co-workers found a puppy in the mango grove on the farm where they work. It was scared, dirty and covered in fleas. The area where she was found is at least a quarter mile from the nearest public road, so who knows when the puppy was abandoned or how long it took to get to where it was found.
We brought her home and gave hear several bathings and a good flea-treatment. We have an appointment with a vet tomorrow afternoon. We don't know if we're going to keep her yet, or even if our landlord will allow it..... but for the time being we are giving this poor puppy the love and care it needs.

What sort of rat bastard abandons a little puppy like this anyway? This little guy would be adopted immediately from any pound or humane society.

She's so adorable with her floopy ears and spots! And so tiny in your lap.
Did you guys give her a name to call her by until you find her a home? Do you think you will keep her?

Yeah, we want to keep her. It's a lot of responsibility.... but I think we are up for it. We've thought of the name "Makena" if we decide to keep her. But no final decision yet....
The really nice thing about having a dog out here is that it immediately marks you as a local resident. The Hawaiian Islands have a pretty strict quarantine policy when it comes to dogs & cats, so tourists are not allowed to bring their dogs over.

what about if you wanted to move back home, would you be able to bring your puppy back to the mainland?

Bringing back is no problem.... Hawaii just has some very strict policies on the importation of animals and plants. And for good reason, when you look at the damage that has been done to the natural ecosystem here by introduced species.

I don't think that we are going to get to keep her I called our landlord (in California) on Saturday morning and have heard no reply, so I emailed her. Usually she's really good about getting back to me, but she hasn't yet. I emailed her daughter (who is our property manager locally) and she says that her mom says no way on the puppy. That super ticks me off, because our neighbors under the same landlord have two large lab dogs that live inside the house! I heard that they had to put down a $6,000 pet deposit to keep them and that it really ticked the landlord off. So I'm at work all depressed right now... and still waiting to hear from the landlord herself, but it doesn't look good.
I just really hope that this is God's way of telling us that He has a nice family lined up who will take better care of the puppy than we can.

Hey there everybody! We totally got to keep the puppy, and we named her Nestle Here are some pics of the pup since you last saw her. When we found her she weighed just over 4 pounds and would fit in your hands, and now she's over 14 pounds and a barky little puppy. Lots of work, but so cute and lovable
