Is there a good way to tell oysters from other shelf mushrooms? I've found oysters once before that I Was positive were them. I was just curious as I seen these lovely mush growing off of a fairly fresh fallen log across a creek. And they smelled lightly, almost like lemon dish detergent, but it was a real light smell compared to a handfull of trumpets.
I thought these purple corals near an amanita were cool

Yes those look like summer oysters. The stem should be off center with the shroom, and close to its attachment point fiberous hairs should be present...they should flush again soon so keep an eye on them there good. my wood pile flushed twice last year,it was dry..good luck and keep posting R.C.

He,y thanks for the kind words and support everyone.
BlackSwampRat, I brought one home, and I did see the white fibrous hairs near the attatchment point of the stem, thanks for that tip. I seen a bunch of baby ones throughout the woods, but these were the only large specimens, and they were full of beetles.

As far as picking and eating oysters goes, I only bother with them when they are still in the "young adult" stage. As they mature, the caps get kind of soggy and they change shape. At that point, the taste and texture changes somewhat. I try to pick them when they look like this:
(pic taken from my oyster patch area)
I also find those "old man of the woods"/Strobilomyces floccopus all over the place around here. Yours look a little different. I think there is a very closely related species.. I don't have the name right now because my books are put away - but mine have much blacker tubes/pores.

Strobilomyces confusus is the name for the old man look-alike. It is also a good edible.

Thanks for pulling up the other name. I've never actually tried any. I heard that they were mediocre and rapidly declining in taste with age.

That's good to know. I haven't tried any either, but my new Miller and Miller guidebook says they're good, and the second Miller writes mushroom cookbooks! Maybe it's not so good. Have you tried floccopus?

I was actually talking about floccopus, sorry about the confusion.
MeadMadeMe, I thought the same thing.. the texture of them looks weird. I suppose one could cut and peel of the tubes and top of the cap though. The inside flesh itself might be good.

MeadMadeMe, if you don't mind me asking, where the fuck do you live!?!? All the pictures your posting make it look like some magical wonder land. I've never in my life seen such a variety of mushrooms in such proximity, let alone newts crawling over the mushrooms caps, and then stumbling upon whats seems like the perfect fishing spot. Good god I'm jealous.
That pic of the purple coral things with the amanita was fucking awsome that looks totally unreal....go figure I've never even seen an amanita in real life. And that after having lived in a bunch of strange, tropical, scenic places in my life. So fucking jealous man!!
