Kindness of Strangers
#5838321 - 07/09/06 10:48 AM (17 years, 6 months ago) |
|

The day I left my fiancee was a hard one. I needed some more boxes for my shit, I had been up all night crying, I had no interest in showering, wearing makeup or even clothes that weren't 5 sizes too big for me. I was a disgusting, pitful mess. I was miserable.
I went to the grocery store and got some more boxes and as I was loading them all into my car, I noticed this older dude walking towards me. Kind of looked like a slightly chubbier Kevin Bacon, actually. He just watched me as he walked in my direction kind of smiling.
He stopped about 10 feet in front of me and said "Hey, I just wanted to let you know that you are beautiful. Never let anyone ever tell ya different!" And he turned around and stared to walk away when he had an afterthought. "I'm not a weirdo or anything, I swear. I just wanted to see ya smile"
I just kind of stood there like an idiot. Speechless, watching this Kevin Bacon stranger walk away. I will never, ever forget it. At my very worst...no less. He gave me a little reason to smile when all I wanted to do was go to sleep and never wake up again.
He probably didn't even realize the impact of his statement.

i've gotten through many a hard time due to the kindness of complete strangers.
also had the greed/assholishness of strangers fuck me over.
but that's a different story, and has occured far fewer times than they've helped me out

yeah it's always grate to be right
there's this one girl i met january this year... we had a short conversation and i nearly made her brake into tears, i knew exectly what she was feeling and why and i knew just what to say! i could tell she was shocked and befor i went on my way i asked if i could give her a hug.... we huged and i could feel her heart race...
i keep wondering what happend to her and hopfully i'll run into her sometime in the future (i thought about tracking her down many times but i didn't know what to say and i thought it was a little over the top to actualy track her down)
i hope i managed to help her though...

One day, I was in the grocery store, buying groceries. This was when money was extremely tight for Kevin and I. I underestimated the amount of cash I had, and ended up substantially short.
The lady in line behind me said, "This is for Jesus" and paid my grocery bill.
Really made me think.

Interesting. Did she do it out of compassion and the kindness of her own heart...or did she do it to look good in the eyes of Jesus?

I really have no idea. But it was amazing to see how Jesus inspired that random act of kindness, whether she did it for him, for me, or herself.

it's very cool... i've always been very anti religion and i was pretty bummed when my direct commander in the army was a riligiuse "simpleton" type person (a sort of opposit to what i'd consider my self) but in hindsight i learned so much from that man! i hope he knows how much i appriciated his time with me...
i was impressed when at passover he'd personally orgenize a foundraiser from all the steady troops at the base to select poor families of the soldiers... they'd buy and deliver them food for the holiday... i remember being so prude of him for that, i knew he was doing it out of the kindness of his heart even though it is a "mitzva"! that gave me much more acceptense for these kind of people and their religion!

Wow, I thought I was making this thread gay. At least I was doing it sarcastically, since then this thread turned REALLY gay.
But seriously, I hoped I've helped people out before by saying something small and meaningful.
One time I was at the grocery store (weird, lots of stories seem to be from there) and this lady was just losing it, crying about everything being so tough and frustrating. I'm not sure what she was upset over, but I was behind her in line and looked right into her eyes, leaned towards her and gave my signature goofy smirk and said "Everything is closer than you think." She didn't say anything but she immediately relaxed. To this day, I have no idea why I said it or how it helped, but it did.
