what do you guys think of this? (cia being sued)
    #5836915 - 07/08/06 09:17 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

"The CIA last year began claiming authority to assess additional Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) fees if the Agency decided any journalist's request is not "newsworthy enough." This policy is a clear attempt to prevent journalists from getting information out to the public. Now, the CIA is being sued. "

i think it's all bs on the CIA's behalf. We have a right to know what is going on. These people (the gov.) are elected in a democratic fashion to represent the people. Not to undermine us. We fight for a democracy while in the process eat away at what once was democracy...

It's news like this that leads me to a point where I wouldn't be surprised to start hearing about poll taxes and such other attempts to defend the interests of the agencies against the best interests of the citizens.

This is somewhat related. I was watching cnn last night and it was about some person running for mayor or govorner. and she lied in her advertisement against her oppenent. they took it to court and the court said that lying is protected under the amendment making it perfectly legal to lie on TV, including presidencial ads or presidencial speaches.

well... yes, it is protected.

Advertisers cannot lie about products, but a politician can promise to make your farts smell like roses if they want to... they're very much allowed to construct intricate webs of falsehood.

The only thing they can't do is lie in a way that defames another person, as doing so means getting their ass kicked in the ensuing litigation that would no doubt be filed against them.

Amendments are universal and inalienable. So, while it is a gigantic pain in the ass for politicians to be allowed to lie as much as they want to on television, I think it's better than if they were not. Creating such an exclusion from first amendment privileges creates a small hole in the precedent of the rights, and a hole allows some other leech to burrow in and widen the wound in the skin that normally protects citizens' rights. Once exclusions are created in rights that are supposed to be unalienable, then politicians can and usually will just keep making up more and more exclusions to suit their own agendas, until our "rights" eventually get to the point where they only apply under a few conditions.

This is what is being done to the fourth amendment, and unfortunately most Americans are not only too stupid to fight back, but they're actually so stupid that they are in favor of it. Fucking plebes...
