I found these the other day and I was wondering if they are active. They bruise blue.

They are not active, but they are likely poisonous. They are one species of many bluing boletes. Boletes are distinct from Agarics in that they have pores on the underside of the cap, rather than the gills of agarics. Do not mess with this mushroom.

CureCat, correct me if I'm wrong but most of the blue-staining boletes that are poisonous also have red pores. These yellow pored ones are likely in the Boletus bicolor group as shroomindole says, and they are supposedly good eating. HOWEVER, because the poisonous boletes also bruise blue... why take the chance?

the general rules are set for novice hunters, and people who might not be able to distinguish this mushroom, Boletus miniato-pallescens, a poisonous bolete:

From this mushroom, Boletus bicolor, a good edible:

1. Avoid blue staining/brusing boletes.
2. Avoid boletes with pore colour ranging from red to orange(for me, this means yellow because it isn't always easy to distinguish orange from yellow).
3. Because of certain intolerances reported by some individuals to some boletes within the Leccinum genus that have an orange cap, avoidance of these mushrooms is advised.
*These rules exclude some choice edibles, but if you are uncertain, you'd better be safe than sorry.
Here is a good page explaining the rules for picking boletes for the table: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/rules_for_boletes.html

Indeed, that's why I avoid the blue-stainers, even though I know I am passing up some edibles. I didn't realize how much Boletus miniato-pallescens looked like bicolor or campestris. Seems to have a less smooth stem and oranger gills, but it's pretty close still. Thanks for the knowledge.

Thank you, I think I also have some Orange-Capped Leccinum Species as well with a white porous under-body instead of gills. Not sure, but I won't be messing with them anyway. Got lots more pics and ID requests to come.
