Unsterilized casing works better than sterilized!
    #583221 - 03/19/02 10:26 AM (22 years, 14 days ago)

my friends been screwing around lately and this is weird. He had 2 batches of casing mix to be sterilized, one was sterilized for 45 min at 15 psi and the other one wasn't sterilized at all. The one that wasn't sterilized hasn't shown contams yet and is colonizing better than the other mix, in fact almost all of the casings cased with the sterilized mix went bad!!! Whats up with this, anyone ever had this happen. I dont think hes gonna sterilize his casing mix anymore though since it seems to produce better results. just seems weird to me, must be some beneficial bacteria in there for this to happen, later

it depends on which casing material is used. verm is fine unsterilized, but i wouldn't dare use sphagnum peat moss unsterilized, unless my intent was to cultivate mold.

That's why some people support the idea of pasteurization instead of sterilization in this process, i also do.

The mix actually contained more peat than verm and It wasn't even pastuerized just mixed with regular tap water from the sink. going to start pasteurizing casing mixes now though, later

the idea behind sterilization is to kill every thing present

the idea of pasturization is to achieve a temp of between 140* and 180* to kill most of the compeditors but preserve the benificial organisms.

boiling is inbetween temps and i have never used this method for any thing so i wouldent know.

i may be slightly off please let me know if i am, PJ

When you pc (properly), you are sterilizing. When you want to pasteurize, it's usually done on the stove top (like when you're preparing straw) or in the oven at low temps. I haven't really used the oven for anything but my perlite, and I can't remember what temp that called for.

On Baby Bear's last few projects she has not sterilized or pasturized her casing....1st a layer of Verm., Saturate (spray bottle) with peroxide water. lay in substrate, spray Lightly with H2O2 water. Another layer of Verm. saturated again (not dripping) she also sprinkles on a light layer of Shultz potting soil (moist). This has worked great for her last few projects:

B+ on Birdseed cased as stated above.

Using peroxide is a form of sterilization.

Just kidding. Kayaman

If the majority of your sterilized casings are contaminating, YOU DID SOMETHING WRONG. The cool down introduced contaminants, incomplete sterilization, heavy contaminant spore load in your transfer or growing areas. They just express themselves very fast in a sterilized casing.

Pasteurization has the same downfall as sterilization, if you mess up, you mess up. Pasteurized casings just have built in mechanisms to limit, or slow down the MISTAKES.

Just applying non treated casing soil, is INTRODUCING CONTAMINATION . This doesn't mean you will fail, you can still have good success.

Yoy are right but there is No cooking or heating involved. Just spray reallly well with the H2O2 mixture. She used to microwave her casing material but this is less hassle and quicker.....(NOTE) It may not work for eveyone.

Alas... I have nothing to add but a question. Would just adding H202 while mixing peat and verm casing mix work also to help kill contams? If so, I mix about three gallons worth at a time. Is there an amount I should try?

Thanks
