A good way to make use of all your leftover poppy pods is to make either poppy tea, which most can't stand the taste of, or make Lemon Laudanum. Which I think, tastes a whole lot better. It's best to use fresh pods if you can. I have so many pods right now, that I can't possibly make enough tea to keep up. So I grind them in a blender while they're still fresh, and store them in the fridge in large ZipLok freezer bags with a little lemon juice sqeezed inside to keep them moist and fresh until I can make tea or Laudanum.
First, I take about 10 lemons and squeeze them :

Then, I add one of my freezer bags full of ground poppy pods into a large pot and add water :

I bring the water temp up to 150f, remove from heat, cover, and let sit for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionaly.
Scoop out as much plant matter as possible with a strainer :

Then pour the liquid through cheese cloth into a 1 gallon size container :

I add about 2 cups of sugar, shake and chill. A nice, relaxing, summer beverage.

Well, I took the Laudanum idea and decided to brew the pods instead of doing it cold, just to make sure to get all the solubles. But yeah, very simular to poppy tea, but with lots of lemons. So it's more like lemonade.

Approximately how many pods do you think you used? Were the pods lanced/harvested for latex opium prior to the tea?
About 5 of my plants have gone brown and don't look good at all, as much as I hate to admit it, they're leaving this Earth soon. It's getting WAY too hot 'round these parts. It's got up to 111 fahrenheit which is ridiculous.
Several of my plants survived. Still, this year's harvest was dimunitive. Hopefully later today, when it cools down, I'll go for a nice little bike ride scouting out various locations to put seeds/starts in the fall time, and possibly once again in the spring. If the Clandestine Papaver Expansion Project works, plenty of pods will be available for seed collection and "extract" experimentation. I want to do several things with it...

I have been reading a bit on distillation and alcohol extraction.I read a little bit of achohol extraction for opium. From what I gather Laudanum is a tincture of opium.Which means it is alcohol extracted.Your recipe calls for water extraction. So I don't think it would be considered Laudanum.
More like poppy lemonade.

I've brewed a killer Hoppy poppy ale, used like 100 pods or so in the boil and then let it ferment and I get an IPA with a real kick.

Laudanum is actually an Opium and Alcohol(with many different variations containing various flavoring, herbs, including sometimes sugar.)mixture. This is a recipe for lemon opium tea. This post is strictly for educational purposes and to help limit the spread of misinformation.
