Perhaps if you wanted to go the extra mile you could buy a horse and feed it the straw, then invest in a shovel and get packin. Im no farmer, but straw isn't ceramic or stainless steal.

im not sure what 5 gallons of straw looks like, the weedwhacker should work.
if the straw is still in a bale, just use a circular saw, or even a jig saw/saw's-all to cut in at desired lengths, keeping the bales banding in place until you work to it.
BUT i do want to add, shredding straw is unnecessary.... regardless of what the teks say
I usually grow on straight straw, and never chop, just pack extra tight
the ONLY time i shredd is when i am using the straw to break up more dense substrate ( i.e. loosening up the consistency of poo )

When your using it to break up poo? what do you mean? So you usually get good results with just leaving it whole? what does your substrate usually consist of? I'm just now getting to bulk substrates and trying to figure out the best/most simple ways to get decent yields without pulling my hair out. I was going to do something like the bulk neglect tek. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

i mean make small gaps in the poo that the myc has to reach for... sort of like adding verm to "loosen " it up... as example.
do i get good results?
yes the trick is to pack it tightly, that is the whole principle behind shredding straw to ensure there isnt any big gaps so it travels from stalk to stalk...
twisting it tightly and packing it firmly does the exact same thing with a lot less work.
i usually use straight straw .. and average 1/2 lb DRY per 2 gallon tray (which has 2 over stuffed mycobags of spawned straw )
and with two bags of colonized straw as substrate, you have plenty of nutrients and DO get multiple flushes, at least 3+ flushes
i have a basic description of how i do straw in my journal *HERE*
the idea for the "mini FC" i use for my straw was actually derived from mycofiles bulk neglect tek...
i have started using poo for cubes ( not just pans) and honeslty, i am not impressed
my straw bags colonizes a LOT faster.... and i have tried mycobags of poo, and also simply pasteurizing the poo
i'll wait till i finish the current grow to debate the potency, i hope with the extra time it took colonizing pays off in potency, but my straw cubes are pretty potent in their own right

I wanted to read your journal on processing poo/straw but the "HERE" link must have expired. Will you send me a copy? Thanks
