is darkness while colonizing important. i believe i read somewhere that it was important to leave the jars in darkness while thwey colonize but im mad excited about this shit and look at them in light 2-3 times a day. is that a bad idea? WELL I DONT CARE THEIR MY BABIES!! but seriously some input...
btw im colonizing in wide mouth salt shakers its all i could find an the needle fits perfect...thought that was kinda funny

The only problem I could think of is premature pinning. If the mycelium growth has come along far enough, and you expose the container to light, you risk mushroom growth.
Hope those salt shakers work out for you.

Light is only one of the pinning triggers, and it needs to be in conjunction with the others to really be effective. I colonize jars on an open shelf at room temperature and normal room lighting from the day of inoculation on. Stamets started that "incubate in total darkness" stuff with the early editions of TMC. He no longer believes or recommends that. I concur. Put them in darkness for two or three days before you birth, so the light can come back to them at the same time as full colonization and the massive reduction in CO2 levels that come with the introduction of fresh air. In nature mycelium colonizes in the substrate where it is dark unless nature uses glass jars now? Anyway myc will of course colonize just fine in light but you lose that trigger and also increase the chances of premature pinning which of course will affect your pinset overall (Paul). It is the coincidence of these triggers that gives us our best pinsets guys no matter what Paul says this isn't only about colonization! Paul refers to not needing darkness IMO because most grow casings which of course the myc isn't exposed until it reaches the surface! Paul knows what premature pinning is and it's affect on overall yields. Thats one reason we can create better pinsets consistantly than nature! Of course it is his prerogative to change his mind once again! LOL

Bear in mind, we're talking about initial colonization in jars. Be sure to read my last sentence above. I cover cased bulk substrates during the spawn run and also during the casing run to block light until after full colonization, so all pinning triggers can be applied at once. These techniques we've developed are why cultivated mushrooms yield much more per square foot of surface area than wild mushrooms.
Where paul changed his mind is in keeping spawn jars in total darkness. He has 10,000 square feet of incubation space with mycelium from dozens or more species colonizing under 12 hours per day of industrial fluorescent lighting with no ill effects. I've been incubating jars in normal room lighting for years with no ill effets. The only time they pin early is if something else is wrong, which triggers the natural survival mechanism to reproduce. I think we're on the same page. RR

I've seen his incubation room and yes all jars are out in the open on selves. You would think that as smart as Paul is he would just turn off the lights when no one is in the room and pocket that money rather than give it to the electrical company
