bird seed moisture
    #5831741 - 07/07/06 01:43 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I have about 18 jars of millet that have been pressure cooked and are waiting for a grain transfer. They look a little dry so I opened one. They are hydrated but not enough to leave moisture on the glass or hands. Should I use them? Also what size holes for lids are common?

I can smash the grains between my fingers. If the outside of the grains are dry but the inside contains moisture will this be enough for colonization or will it possibly be slow or not work at all.

did you use QT jars?

QT jars yes. I soaked and simmered. I also let them sit for about 2 weeks but I don't know how much moisture evaporates through a 1/2 inch tyvek hole. Sorry I know its hard to answer this question. I would have just threw them out and started over but it takes so much time with soaking and pcing.

make an LC and shoot'em up

then if they fail, all you lose is birdseed and not your spores

Next time, inoculate them within 36 hours of PC'ing.

Letting them sit around 2 weeks, is not a good idea.

LC is THE WAY TO GO.
