VoIP , WIFI/WImax and all that jazz......?

well... i don't know much about all those things (wireless internet isn't one of my concerns right now... along with multitude other advances in technology like crazy cell phones and the likes) the reason i'm writing this is that my brother has somehow been convinced to start working for an MLM compeny (Multi Level Marketing) called UBIPhone (or UBIfone i dunno)
they're selling frenchises for people who want to sell their products (VoIP cell phones... cheep service but not yet fully operational) they promiss that VoIP is the next thing and when WiMAX gets implemented across the world people would hurry to migrate from cellphones to the new VoIP services... makes sense i guess but i don't know anything about these things and basically i'm just looking to hear some thoughts on the future of this technology
MLM is a nasty way to market anything and i always looked down on this system but if my OWN brother has gotten him self into this (and my brother is smart enough to avoide any scams and BS... i trust my brother on this and yet it's still "shady" ) there must be a real chance... if everything goes the way he hopes he stands to make as much money off this with in a year and a half as he dose from his current job! and the pay will only grow with time (while he has less work to do)
so what's your thoughts on all this (and please let's not make this an MLM good or bad debate... that's not what this thread is about!)

umm i dont think that wimax is even out or fully implimented. Hence developing a product and a marketing strategy for some thing like this is impossible.
for these phones to work they would need access to a wireless internet source, which at current rates only expand a few hundred feet from the router, and will not surpas cellphone coverage for several several years *if* it ever happens.
IMHO SCAM

Wimax from wiki: Link
Seems like it's implemented in certain places, very few though, looks like it could be at least a few years before that gets off at all
And Zippoz is right, Wifi only reaches a few hundred feet (if your lucky).
SCAT... I mean SCAM

I happen to agree with your brother. I already use a Skype phone instead of traditional phone service, it costs $30 a year instead of $30 a month and works great. Newer wifi models make it possible to talk from any open hotspot without needing a computer running Skype. Widespread wimax will definitely enable a new class of "voip cell phone" device and I know I'll be buying one. However, once it gains traction my guess is you'll see tons of taxes and regulations imposed which will cripple VOIP's inherent competitive advantage. So, I applaud your brother for his broad vision and forward thinking but as with any new and potentially disruptive technology I'd consider it an unpredictable investment.

> I happen to agree with your brother.
I would tend to agree as well. It is very early in the game, but this seems to be the direction technology is headed. The last I checked, WiMax was still not finalized, but it, or something very close, is the future.
> And Zippoz is right, Wifi only reaches a few hundred feet (if your lucky).
How did we suddenly change the topic from WiMax, which has around a ten mile range, to WiFi which has around a three hundred foot range? Once WiMax is finalized, and once WiMax enabled "skype phones" are produced, the range of these phones will be in the miles range, not the hundreds of feet range.
> I mean SCAM
I have no idea if the company is a scam or not. However, the vision detailed in the original post is accurate, and is most likely the direction technology is headed, in my (and apparently Ythan's) opinion. There may be detail changes such as what happened with WiFi (802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, etc), but these certainly do not void the technology or make a company that is trying to get a head start implementing the technology a scam.
> my guess is you'll see tons of taxes and regulations imposed which will cripple VOIP's inherent competitive advantage
It has already started. Just this week, the FCC announced that VoIP services must pay into the robin hood funds (take from the rich urban areas, give to the poor rural areas) just as regular phone carriers must do. However, many places in the world will benefit from WiMax/VoIP that do not fall under FCC regulations.
Regarding the investment potential. I'm have no idea... I'm a computer person, not an investment person. My comments are directed towards the technology, not the money making (or losing) potential behind it.

hummm... that's a little reassuring, my brother keeps saying that as an investment he's lucky to get a head start BEFORE WiMax is implemented (since it will only grow even more then it currently IS growing when it does)
he didn't spend much money and hopfully he'll stand to gain from this (kinda like the folks that had shares on copper befor the phone was invented! or got McDonalds franchises for cheep)
Zippoz for me it just makes sense (although i AM wary of the extravagant claims that ubiphone make) i can see how it's simply then next logical step... i've seen cell phones take over and change society in the span of just a few years and i wish my perents had the foresight to get into THAT buisness 10-12 years ago when cell phones were build like bricks and were far less then ideal
MLM is indeed EVIL IMO but the fact is it DOES work... not the line of work i'd like to be doing (i'm not one for sales) and frankly i don't see my brother doing it as well but if he truly belives in this and is willing to make the effort he stands to gain alot (not only money... he keeps saying how he wants to get out of the "rat race" and have more time for his family)
if i wasn't the recluse i am right now and i had some social context to meet people i could work with on this i'd consider buying such a franchise my self! within two years i could make more money then my dad with a fraction of the effort i'd have time to presue more important things then "paying the bills"!
anyway... this is all pipe dreams for me... hopefully this is indeed where the tide will take us and my brother will be riding it
