I think I found the perfect summer hobby
    #5831222 - 07/07/06 11:46 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Ever since I cleaned up the backyard...there is just all that patio space SCREAMING for furniture. It would be nice to have a bbq back there and just relax and watch the sun go down outside once in a while.

So what I plan on doing is building my own patio furniture. Nothing complex at first. Just a simple picnic table and other things of that nature.

What Im asking is...does any one have any good links or advice for a beginning woodworker?

This will be awesome once it's finished. I can picture it now. Ahh. I need a new freakin hobby anyways. Im getting tired of playing guitar hero all day.

Advice: Make sure to use treated lumber, or it will just rot outdoors...

start with something really easy!

not a table....
or a chair.....
try building a footrest with the wood, just to try out all the stuff

That's some good advice

I plan on hitting up barns and noble soon to check out a few books. Im dead set on building atleast ONE table for the backyard though. Im having a birthday bbq on the 28th...and I would HATE to buy/rent tables.

And plus, I hear the bitches dig it when you tell them "Oh yeah...that table? I built it, no biggie."

I see now... all the crap is free...

it would be easier to bust out custom furniture in CAD... then build...

I've never messed around with CAD before...but I bet it couldnt be that hard.

What CAD program would you reccomend to a newbie?

of course , that would also require more effort and work on his part, but having something custom would be well worth it

Hell yeah. I'll check out AutoCAD 2006.

I could half ass it with a bunch of 2x4's...but that wouldnt be fun at all. It would also look like shit too. I guess I can tinker around with CAD and a few noobie books.

I want to start buildin this thing monday. I really have nothing to do all week so getting it done sooner would rock.

p.s. when you buy pressure treated lumber, it has a warranty on it... but that warranty is voided as soon as you cut the lumber...

I'm sure you'll find this to be very rewarding

Building stuff is always great, just make a few practice cuts, etc. if you're not familiar/comfortable with the tools...

doh! I think this'll be a pretty good project for the summer afternoons.

Plus, I'll give my pops a call. He'll love to help me out with this.
