brf jars w/lid or tinfoil
    #5830579 - 07/07/06 05:16 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i have 10 jars 5 with lids, filter disk and tin foil. the other 5 have no lid at all just one layer of tin foil then i pc and inoculate. then i put another layer on. the ones with just tin foil have fully colonized in like 12 days. the other ones took like 7 days just to start and one is contamed. i never had any problem with the just tinfoil ones. can anyone tell me why? the reason i just had tin foil on some is because they were glass cups and i had more mix left. so i put it in to glass cups and used tinfoil like i said before. and poof they are so quick.thinking on doing them all this way instead of using lids on my widemouth canning jars.

I think it it because the ones with lids are taking to long to col. because of poor AE. leaving them more prone to contam. the ones with tinfoil are colonizing faster because of better air exchange making them more able to fight off contams. Just a guess

You don't need any tin foil or filters on PF jars as long as you have a contam. barrier. You got lucky with the tin foil cups, but all you need are canning jar lids with 4 or 5 holes. Loosen the lid a little bit and flip the jar over to exchange CO2 for oxygen at 50-75% colonization. GL.
