can you colonize directly to shit?

Would this work:
get horse shit, dry it out, rehydrate it, pressure cook in jars, and inoculate the jars with spores? seems logical, closer to how it happens in nature, but every tek I've read says colonize on grain, spawn to poo. why?

i've seen it work, or at least to an extent... people use wbs/hpoo mixtures. i think the reason you don't do it right off the bat, is because hpoo contains beneficial bacteria and sometimes even beneficial 'firefang' mycellium. when you pressure cook said substrate, it kills all of that, and you end up with a pseudo-nutrient-rich poop mixture... not to mention, if you get the moisture wrong it'll be a brick after the PC. also, nothing colonizes faster than wbs spawned to horse poop. when you use horse poop as a bulk sub, you pasteurize it, killing mold spores, but sparing the helpful bacterias. you can't just pasteurize as a regular substrate because it doesn't kill the bad things, the only reason you can spawn to a pasteurized substrate, is because the mycellium from a completely colonized cake is quite resiliant against bacterial contaminations. anyhow, i'm probably boring you... short answer = yes (use vermiculite and/or wbs) long answer = no.

Not boring me at all. I like thorough answers. I want to know exactly what it is I'm doing.

150 years of others experimenting tells me colonize grain & spawn it to a good substrate, then add a casing cover.

It can work but for some reason spores are reluctant to get started directly on sterile manure. Spores directly to sterile manure tends to have a very long lag time before you see anything and then its slow growing until the mycelium finally figures it out and starts growing aggressively. A chunky liquid culture injected directly into sterile manure works much better. An alternative is to load the manure in jars and then place a layer of precooked grain on top before pressure cooking. The grain should colonize easily and the mycelium will have no problem leaping off to the manure when its well established. Good luck!

That is my experience exactly. i tried to make poocakes a few times, and they took over twice as long to colonize than BRF or WBS. i find it much, much quicker to just spawn into poo. even edibles like portbello go much quicker that way for me (on BRF then poo)

I have mixed birdseed and non pasturized horse poo, and put that mix in my jars and PC'ed them; it colonized just fine. The jars with poo, did just as good as the ones without poo. It workes it can be done, i'd say if you want to try it, try it. But you will find out that it's really just a waste of time. If you are looking for a faster way to grow that's not it. Hope that helps! Good Luck!

I have used poo water in pf cakes(rye grass seed flour). Produced very potent shrooms. However the contam ratio was very high. Over 1/2 of the cakes.
