What would you do with $25,000?
#5828245 - 07/06/06 04:20 PM (17 years, 6 months ago) |

I just sold my place and after all debts(besides my new car) are payed off, I'm going to be walking away with roughly 25gs.
I'm unsure what to do with it. I was thinking of paying my car off completely(probably about 17gs to buy it out) and just saving the rest. Or I was thinking of investing most of it. I think it has been decided that I'm for sure putting 4000 aside for travelling.
What would you do with it?

I honestly don't even think I could spend that much on cds and records alone.
Although I was thinking of upgrading my stereo system....or possibly some loudass guitar equipment

I don't know much about investing though, but obviously it's a smart thing to do. If I payed off my car, I'd roughly have 8 grand left. I'd probably only end up investing 4-5 of it. Is that even worth it?

Nothing wrong with paying off your car and saving money in the long run from interest and removing a monthly payment.
I would suggest investing teh rest into a low risk mutual fund or something. Look at the money as spent and let it sit unless you have an emergency.
A friend of mine invested about 10k and in less then a year lucked out with about 45k, turned around and is buying another house with that as his downpayment.

Invest.
I'm more of a conservative investor. I have my money in CD's, mutual funds, and a little in a money market account.
Check out Vanguard and American investment houses (they both have good reputations). Vanguard has no front-end or back-end fees which is nice.

There are countries in the world where you can live a decent life off the *interest* you can get off those 25 thou.
If you wanna blow some, blow 5 grand on what you like to do, but save/invest the remaining 20.
If you can literally do without the money, consider an obligation, loaning money to the/a National Treasury for some years, yielding a guaranteed interest over the period. Nothing as secure as that, only the nation's bankrupcy will part you from your money.

Yea, I don't know much about that stuff. For me to live comfortably, I need at least 3000 a month. I doubt the interest would be anywhere near that. Although I'm sure you are right, it would still be a substantial amount.

Dont bother paying off your car completely, it will devalue faster than 25 g's would accrue in a quality investment.
17000 into a car today will give you 3000 in ten years 17000 into a quality investment will give you hopefully 25000 in the same amount of time
Thats my understanding anyway

See, the hopefully part scares me. What if I make nothing at all, or even lose money? That wouldn't be cool, that's for sure.
I see where you are coming from. Even it was gauranteed I'd make 15000 grand, it would still be much more worth it then paying off the car.

A low-yielding investment is about 2%-4% a year. ($500-$1000)
A medium-yielding investment is about 5%-9% a year. ($1250-$2250)
A high-yielding investment is anything that is 10% or higher a year.
As you can see...you can't live off of the interest on $25,000.

Open your mind. For you to live comfortably in the USA you need 3 grand a month. In other countries the same money has far greater value, and only certain luxuries will be as expensive as in the USA. So, what do you want?
The intuitive response is "I want to live where I'm now!" But do you? Have you looked into alternatives?
25K isn't too much but if cleverly put to use it can get you more money. But what I wanted to stress: in some nations (like India) you could RETIRE on the very sum you're holding now.
Getting 5% interest on your money is as easy as passing a wet fart. For 25K thats $1.250 yearly or about $100 a month, without touching the actual money. So whatever you plan to do, if you can DO WITHOUT those 25K (as in: not really need it) you can use it to increase your standard of living with at the very least $100 a month, every month, without touching the amount you now have.
Now I don't know about your income (nor is it my business) but a free, extra $100 every month is a nice boost to anyone.

I understand what you are saying. I'm actually in canada though. Well right now, I'm clearing 2900-3000 a month. I mean, yea sure, 100 bucks a month is sweet, but it's not enough to curb my temptation A hundred bucks isn't worth locking up 25000...you know what I mean? In my situation anyhow. Ultimately, if I could put 20000 "somewhere" and be making 500-800 a month, then it would be worth it. But I don't see how that can happen without taking a risk. And I'm not much of a gambling man.
In the end though, either way, saving is key and it is definetely something I need to work on.
Obviously there's places where my moneys worth more, like india say, but moving to india isn't really something I'd like to do. Now, investing my money over there or something...is it worth it?

The third world is awesome, especially in the Caribbean. If you want you could always live in Grenada on nothing for example. I have family who lives there and I've spent a lot of time there myself. The people are great, there is very little crime, and there is a lot of western influence because it was a British colony. There is an insane amount of food growing everywhere and spear/fishing is very easy to do. Even if you insisted on actually owning land or a residence, that doesn't cost very much.
Only problems are std's and hurricanes.

The shangri-la of international investment at the moment is investing into the Chinese economy, which is rapidly becoming a superpower, and is an unstoppable force, and you can probably do this through investment companies which are based in Canada.
The higher the gains, the higher the risk. The benefit of loaning to your national treasury (obligations) is that it is no-risk. Unless Canada falls off the face of the earth, it will guarantee you that you get your money back, as well as the interest they promised you. Thats the securest investment (safer than a bank even) but its reflected in the low interest it generates. On the other end of the spectrum are wild guesses. If you had bought shares for Microsoft in the 80s... Somewhere in between you got to find your mark.
How about blowing an amount and securely investing the rest? That way you have your reward and an investment on the long term.

That is a good idea. I'm leaning towards this. I just want enough to go on a nice long vacation and possibly buy some guitar equipment. The rest will go into a low risk investment.
Thanks for the advice people.
It's still tough though, you know. I want to blow 20,000 so bad. I've done it before when I was a lot younger and a lot dumber. And you know what, even though some of the memories are the best I have, I have to admit there is a lot of regret. So now, I've been basically given a second chance and I want to go about it a lot smarter.

Don't go for trivial things. Great things can be achieved (like an INSANE vacation) for U$D 5.000, and you'll return to a 20K investment that will still yield you 80% of what you wouldve gotten if you had invested it all. Good deal, no?
Don't get hooked on spending teh money. IT IS NEVER ENOUGH.

Dude...put your money into stocks. Find a company you think is successful and has alot going for them. One that will not go bankrupt and is trading at a good price. You can make a TON of money in the market right now, especially with 25k. There is some risk involved with this, but I think the potential rewards greatly outweigh the risks. It is VERY easy to make money right now in the stock market.
Just start out slow and get a feel for it. Start looking at stocks of companies you like and trade small amounts. See how it works out. If you are making decent money, start putting more into it. It's actually very easy once you get the hang of it.
Or you could just put it into mutual funds or some other crap like that and earn 5-10% a year. Do it my way and you could end up doubling up your money or better within a year...or losing a bunch depending on how you do I guess.

What would I do? Well....there would be a lot more LSD floating around my neighborhood, and I would have a chem-lab. I'd rather not go into any more detail.

I'm defintely going to be picking up an extremely nice guitar amp. I've wanted one for just over 3 years now. I know it's something that will greatly improve my quality of life. hehe for real. I'll never look back on something like that. And when I buy it, I'm buying it know it's the amp I'm going to have for a LOONG time.

The third world is awesome, especially in the Caribbean. If you want you could always live in Grenada on nothing for example.
Would U$D 100-200 a month cut it in Grenada? Because thats what he can get on a sustainable basis from the 25K he's holding.
I'm serious when i say its easy to live on zero US dollars and still have a good time. It seems like practicaly 25% of the population does. You would be camping or would have a set up a little shack for you to sleep at night but if your cool with that then you're good on zero dollars. If not, I'm not sure how much lodging would be, but you could get something decent for peanuts.
Good food is fairly cheap and rum costs significantly less than milk (i can't remember how much for a gallon but its near nothing). It wouldn't be hard to live on under $100 a month.
And right now China and i believe also Taiwan and Japan are pouring money into the country. It will only get better unless it gets hit with another Ivan but it shouldn't, at least not for a while.

Life is all about the experience. With that said, I would take the $25,000 pack up only the necessities and backpack across the globe for however long I could until I ran out of money. No resorts, I would refuse to be a tourist just snapping pictures from far away. I want to be in the action, live with the people. That would be far more fulfilling than having a car paid off. IMHO anyways.

If i didnt care about my career I'd probably move to Thailand and study Muay Thai while partying up and down the coast in the down time. Or maybe move to Goa and relax for a while.
Well, that or buy two of these and an eastern european sex slave.

I'd put $15k aside to pay my child support, I'd take the remaining $10k and travel through Japan, Indonesia, India, etc., and teach English overseas for three years.

Oh, i meant either go to thailand or stay and buy coke. Even though I've pretty much quit coke, might do it one more time before summer's over.
And I already study MT, but its just a dream of mine to go there and do the 8 hour a day trainings and fight a few thais in the ring even tho it might be hard to find someone in my weightclass. And the country sure does look beautiful and the food looks awesome. I'll deffinately make at least one trip. For now it looks like i'm just gonna try and catch a prideFC show in Japan.

I very much want to go. I've heard so many good things about it. And yes, I'd very much like to learn Muay Thai there. It would be a must if I lived there for awhile.
I just need to find someone to go with. I get a little nervous thinking about travelling to such places all by myself.

If you are going to Thailand, be sure to ask/look around for a place that makes "special omelets." They put Mushrooms (and LSD when they are not available in them).
No joke.
Good luck.

Technically no, but the practice exists, they use Panaeolus especially grown for the purpose.
After a hot day of training comes the cool of the evening, the smell of mosquito incense, a rich meal for you and your local friends, $5 total, sitting behind a cold beer, feeling the Panaeolus omelette add a gentle layer of psychedelia to your evening contentness as the sun paints the sky a crimson red.. Damn, that sounds like a plan
