Open your mind. For you to live comfortably in the USA you need 3 grand a month. In other countries the same money has far greater value, and only certain luxuries will be as expensive as in the USA. So, what do you want?
The intuitive response is "I want to live where I'm now!" But do you? Have you looked into alternatives?
25K isn't too much but if cleverly put to use it can get you more money. But what I wanted to stress: in some nations (like India) you could RETIRE on the very sum you're holding now.
Getting 5% interest on your money is as easy as passing a wet fart. For 25K thats $1.250 yearly or about $100 a month, without touching the actual money. So whatever you plan to do, if you can DO WITHOUT those 25K (as in: not really need it) you can use it to increase your standard of living with at the very least $100 a month, every month, without touching the amount you now have.
Now I don't know about your income (nor is it my business) but a free, extra $100 every month is a nice boost to anyone.

But, do you want to live in a third world country where disease is rampant, people probably despise Americans, and there are no modern comforts?

I understand what you are saying. I'm actually in canada though. Well right now, I'm clearing 2900-3000 a month. I mean, yea sure, 100 bucks a month is sweet, but it's not enough to curb my temptation A hundred bucks isn't worth locking up 25000...you know what I mean? In my situation anyhow. Ultimately, if I could put 20000 "somewhere" and be making 500-800 a month, then it would be worth it. But I don't see how that can happen without taking a risk. And I'm not much of a gambling man.
In the end though, either way, saving is key and it is definetely something I need to work on.
Obviously there's places where my moneys worth more, like india say, but moving to india isn't really something I'd like to do. Now, investing my money over there or something...is it worth it?

The third world is awesome, especially in the Caribbean. If you want you could always live in Grenada on nothing for example. I have family who lives there and I've spent a lot of time there myself. The people are great, there is very little crime, and there is a lot of western influence because it was a British colony. There is an insane amount of food growing everywhere and spear/fishing is very easy to do. Even if you insisted on actually owning land or a residence, that doesn't cost very much.
Only problems are std's and hurricanes.

I'd help my mom pay off a lot of her debt, then I'd milk the rest of that cash like a fattened cow, long and slow, rather than blowing it.

The shangri-la of international investment at the moment is investing into the Chinese economy, which is rapidly becoming a superpower, and is an unstoppable force, and you can probably do this through investment companies which are based in Canada.
The higher the gains, the higher the risk. The benefit of loaning to your national treasury (obligations) is that it is no-risk. Unless Canada falls off the face of the earth, it will guarantee you that you get your money back, as well as the interest they promised you. Thats the securest investment (safer than a bank even) but its reflected in the low interest it generates. On the other end of the spectrum are wild guesses. If you had bought shares for Microsoft in the 80s... Somewhere in between you got to find your mark.
How about blowing an amount and securely investing the rest? That way you have your reward and an investment on the long term.

Inflation can be a bitch, but yes, with 5% you can most likely increase your standard of living.

Would U$D 100-200 a month cut it in Grenada? Because thats what he can get on a sustainable basis from the 25K he's holding.

That is a good idea. I'm leaning towards this. I just want enough to go on a nice long vacation and possibly buy some guitar equipment. The rest will go into a low risk investment.
Thanks for the advice people.
It's still tough though, you know. I want to blow 20,000 so bad. I've done it before when I was a lot younger and a lot dumber. And you know what, even though some of the memories are the best I have, I have to admit there is a lot of regret. So now, I've been basically given a second chance and I want to go about it a lot smarter.

Don't go for trivial things. Great things can be achieved (like an INSANE vacation) for U$D 5.000, and you'll return to a 20K investment that will still yield you 80% of what you wouldve gotten if you had invested it all. Good deal, no?
Don't get hooked on spending teh money. IT IS NEVER ENOUGH.

Dude...put your money into stocks. Find a company you think is successful and has alot going for them. One that will not go bankrupt and is trading at a good price. You can make a TON of money in the market right now, especially with 25k. There is some risk involved with this, but I think the potential rewards greatly outweigh the risks. It is VERY easy to make money right now in the stock market.
Just start out slow and get a feel for it. Start looking at stocks of companies you like and trade small amounts. See how it works out. If you are making decent money, start putting more into it. It's actually very easy once you get the hang of it.
Or you could just put it into mutual funds or some other crap like that and earn 5-10% a year. Do it my way and you could end up doubling up your money or better within a year...or losing a bunch depending on how you do I guess.

What would I do? Well....there would be a lot more LSD floating around my neighborhood, and I would have a chem-lab. I'd rather not go into any more detail.

I'm defintely going to be picking up an extremely nice guitar amp. I've wanted one for just over 3 years now. I know it's something that will greatly improve my quality of life. hehe for real. I'll never look back on something like that. And when I buy it, I'm buying it know it's the amp I'm going to have for a LOONG time.
