any freemasons?
    #5826949 - 07/06/06 08:49 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

wondering if there are any freemasons here. its to my understanding that one of the requirements to becoming a freemason is to abide by the laws of your country, but that seems to go against many of the teachings themselves. considering many of the teachings are in the context of theory, not practice (at least not in the apprentice levels).

also, the hierarchical model seems to be a little on the unjust side... but this is 100% speculation. anyways, im thinking of applying to a local chapter, to continue a family tradition and to expand my own possibilities.

i realize all of the negative connotations that go along with masons, along with many of the stories regarding templars, KKK, satanists, luciferians, communists, etc. but as with anything else, taken with a grain of salt.

the freemason chapter in my area seems to be very involved with community service, family outings, blood drives, etc. and I really think it would be a good move forward in developing some good social relationships with people I would otherwise never come into contact (or conversation) with.

anyways, thoughts? comments? (p.s. how much does membership cost on average?)

ill be asking these questions and more at the temple in town, but figured I could get some insight here as well

My grandfather was a freemason(Masonic Order of the Knights Templar, to be exact). I've thought about joining. But if it means following the nation's drug laws, then I'll just forget about it.

considering the fact that freemasonry predates this country (usa)... that stipulation doesn't make much sense, when applied to current laws. but i have the same issue, although i doubt drug tests are involved, the use of drugs does seem to come into direct conflict with the practices of freemasonry.

i doubt i will bring that part up when i apply though, heh. more than likely, i will ask something more round-a-bout, like how strict that code is, considering speeding is against the law, as is jaywalking, california-stops (rolling stops), etc.

essentially equating the trivial traffic laws to trivial drug laws, without making any sort of obvious connections

I think mainly what the freemasons teach is perfection of virtue, so it's not really a matter of something being prohibited or not. It's more about being the most virtuous, upstanding person you can be. And perhaps different lodges have different views about how drugs relate to that.
