What to do about flies?
    #5826760 - 07/06/06 06:59 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys...
I'm having some troubles with flies getting into my casings. They've been there for a couple weeks now and just wont go away. They don't seem to be effecting the fruiting of the shrooms, I've still regularly been harvesting good flushes and I can't seem to find any larvea or worms inside the fruiting bodies so I think the shrooms are good to eat...

But still aren't flies considered a contam? What should I do about them?
THanks

House flies can be pretty nasty, but a fully colonized substrate should be able to hold its own. My experience with fruit flies and gnats is they are there to munch on your mycelium, but don't use the substrate to breed in because it's too packed and dense. It's kinda fun to use the vacuum cleaner hose to suck them up. Put a flea and tick collar for dogs in the vacuum cleaner bag to make sure they croak when they get there and don't crawl back out.

I just threw out a shitload of bad brfverm substrate and the next day there were literally hundreds of little itty bitty flies flying about bouncing around like they aint none. (not sure what that means, i'm high) anyway, I wish had my snapperdoodle (venus fly trap) now that I have flies. When I did have it, i left an old apple to rot, and no flies came. Flies were like: No. So, what're ya gonna do? I'll tell you: I'm gonna kill those flies. Vacuum style. :stoned:
