Could I have messed up already?
    #5823634 - 07/05/06 01:26 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

Well I'm on stage one, or two of my mushroom journey and I think I might have already messed it up.

Just for reference I did these steps.

-Soaked Wild Bird Seed for 12+ hours
-Drained mixed into a 75% WBS and 25% Verm in quart size jars
-Covered jars(with no filter) with tinfoil and put in the PC
PC cooked for around 1 hour+
-Took out of the PC took in my room put in a box with lid for a few moments ***Jars were cool to the touch***
-Smacked up the syringe to knock about all the spores. Readied the syringe tip by heating it with a lighter.
-Opening each quart jar one by one I put about 2-2.5cc's of spore solution into each jar. Just put the syringe as deep as it would go and injected.
-Proceded to put the jars into a dark cabinent which was sprayed with Bleach solution

My main worries are that the jars caught contam as I was innoculating them, syringes I used had been in the heat previously and were warm upon delivery(dead spores), and/or I'm just freaking out about nothing.

It has only been a few days and I have yet to see growth in my jars.

I know each one of those steps could the chalk full of ways to contaminate, but could you guys possibly give me some peace of mind?

sorry. no piece of mind for you.

you did mess up.
a few times.

the one that got you for sure was your inoculation.
just becasue those jars were "cool" on the outside,
they probably were not on the inside.

I predict the following:

you will see no mycelium growth due to the high temp of the
wbs.
however, the verm is both a mistake and a savior perhaps.

the verm will throw your water content way off and make life difficult for your jars.
I have done it before with success, but you have to be used to it.
chances are your jars will be too dry.

your spores could have soaked into the vermiculite.
and in the vermiculite they may germinate.
I think this would be your only hope without having waited
for the jars to cool 100%.

having no filter or contam barrier of any sort in another huge mistake.
well FF gets away with just tinfoil, so if you have that you have a shot.

you very well could be viewing some mold soon.
that procedure reeks of it.

chances of success are very slim.
sorry to say.
try again while you wait and do it right this time.

Hmm damn I was hoping for some good news. Oh well. I let the jars sit for 7 - 8 hours each when done with the PC, so I assumed they were fine as far as temp goes.

As far as the verm I've seen so many people do it I didn't know it could cause much of a problem.

If nothing comes of the entire thing I'll re-do it in a week.
