coffee dunk question
    #5822932 - 07/05/06 09:44 AM (17 years, 6 months ago)

i searched all last night to find that huge thread on the benefits of dunking your cakes in a coffee water minx but could not find it for some reason. i wanted to check it out before i dunked my freshly birthed cakes but had no luck so i brewed up some coffee, used about a 1/4 of a cup of coffee, no more then half a cup in 4qt of water. after making the solution the color was very similar to malt/water mix for LC. is that to much coffee, to little? if its too much what will go wrong?

I personaly wouldn't use a dunk solution with any nutrients whatsoever in it. I've heard of using coffee/water when you're putting your cakes together, but not dunking..I wouldn't do it for fear of inviting contaminates.

ahh thats the thread i was looking for, thanks! i guess i must have remembered incorrectly. i remembered the cakes being dunked in coffee water. oh well, hopefully there wont be any contams. so instead of using just plain water, one uses coffee water mix when making the substrate?

Yep, add the coffee water to the substrate.  Dunking in it isn't a great idea and will probably lead to contamination.  If you take a look at the "speeding up PF grows" thread I got down in my signature, there's some info on how I use coffee in regular old PF cakes.  That other thread there is a mile long applying mostly to grains and gets confusing

Agreed. I don't do pf cakes, but use coffee to hydrate grains and compost. Dunk in plain water for the reasons stated above. Hopefully, it will all work out ok since this is first flush.

Im now finishing my compost which Im going to dehydrate. My question is: it is a good idea to use a coffe water or worm casting water solution to hydrate it before pasteurizate it?  or it would add to much nutrients?

thanks for all the info guys, hopefully it will work out without contams. the water as sterilized and the was the coffee. the container was sterilized as well with a good seal. i used my PC to dunk them. ill slightly rinse the cake in steril water to wash off any coffee particles that end up on the cake. hopefully that hill help with a spray of good ol’ H2O2.

well last night i took the cakes out of their coffee water bath and gently rinsed them in sterilized distilled water. it was distilled when i bought it of course then i boiled it for sterilization. this morning i woke up and found new myc growth, very bright white and fluffy, like a cloud. still smells ok. Still way early in the game, still growing through day one in the FC. Ive got lots of hope for these cakes because the spent a little over a week in the incubator after 100% colonization so the mcy as a pretty good grip on the cakes. ill keep you all informed in i can remember!:)

Isn't coffee a fungicide? Apparently it is okay for mycelium. Or is it? I dunked in coffee but my cakes were spent anyway. It did seem to help a good bit with pinning.

Coffee is fungi food, not a fungicide. I still don't recommend dunking in coffee because so many growers have lost their cakes to molds after doing so. If you want to use coffee with cakes, use weak coffee when you make the cake.

Nah about 50/50 is the right mix. I just read about that article and theory of the whole coffe and caffine thing. It brings up some pretty good arguments I would deff. like to experiment also with the coffe solution.
