I can't sleep.

Nope I can't! It's 6:33 AM and I've been up all night. This really needs to change. I've tried sleeping pills and somehow I fight the urge (or they aren't too effective). Then I wake up in the afternoon and I feel robbed of most of my day, and feel that I need to stay up later (or I'm simply not tired) to compensate. And hence the vicious cycle ensues...
So, any hints? I'm thinking I should just get something that will knock me out tonight at midnight.

sleeping pilss are the wrong choice!
you need a REASON to get up in the morning if you want it hard enough you'd be able to turn the cycle back to normal (that'd be the reason... but that dosn't hold for long, belive me i know!)
apart from that... doing any sort of execrsize would give your body a reason to sleep
i've been there... it sucks when you're idle all day/night you try to sleep and it never happens untill you're all wacked out and then when you wake up you're looking at another idle day because "i've already missed my chances for today"
just DO something... anything...

you can sleep... it's just a process of figuring out how.
now we all go without sleep sometimes, because a world of schedules and commitments is not a natural way of living...
i went without sleep but fortunately did not have to work today..... but that's only because i had finally gotten to sleep in a lot being back from a vacation and then went back to my place having not been there in a long time, so I was not tired and did not have a sleep ritual set up.
y ou may have to choose..... stay up 24 hours and never sleep no matter how tired you are, so you can go to bed at what your "bedtime" is...... or consistently force yourself to go bed at a bedtime and figure out how to fall asleep.
sleeping pills are only a cheap trick..... melatonin is pretty good.
it's not that hard once you figure it out, but the secret to figuring it out is in your head.
what i'm geussing is you don't really want to sleep and you are occupied with other things that you deem more important, but this clashes with the real world?

I find sleeping pills very effective.
I used to under estimate them. I have some prescribed, not to me, but i got my hands on some. Zopiclone is the brand. The other week i was bored and took one at 12:30 noon, thinking it would act like a benzo in some way lol. But no, i just slept from 2pm through till 6pm. I was pissed when i woke up and found i had wasted my day. I only lay down because it seemed like a good idea.
Lately its been really hot at night and i have had trouble staying/getting asleep, all i do is pop one of them and I'm gone an hour later.
If thats not good for you, it seems you need a routine. If you stay awake till 6am, then only sleep till 10. Get up at 10 every morning, no matter how late you manage to sleep. You seem to compromise what sleep you loose at night during the day, that is why you have trouble at night.
I suggest you get an alarm clock or stick to a routine. If you have the time to sleep all day, I suggest you get a job.

Get more exercise during the day.
Try kava kava late at night, 30 mins before you want to sleep.
Or melatonin.
Or valerian.

I've tried melatonin, it's all right. Still can somewhat fight it off though.
See, I really don't have a reason to get up early in the morning. I have work to do everyday but I can get it done anytime I want to. I don't have summer classes so that's another reason. Although, I just feel it to be more productive if I can get up early and start my day ``fresh.''
Anyways, tried staying up 24 hours and I still end up sleeping a long time (until afternoon, even!). Sleeping pills I might give it a shot again, but I really like leery11's advice: it's a battle within your own mind and a test of your self-discipline! Although, a few sleep aids wouldn't hurt .

is it easier to sleep normally when you have school classes?
I'm kind of the same way, during the summer I might sleep until 2 and still be tired when I get up, even if I've had 12 hours.
Maybe it isn't a problem for you if you are getting your work done?

I'd just like to make more out of day, that's all. More daylight hours has an effect on my happiness, I guess. Plus, more things are open during the day than at night.
Anyways, I just ate 500mcg of melatonin. Hope it works!

if you are married...there is one way to get good sleep. a few hours before bed go for it..do the deed! make it a workout then have a nice cold beer after...ahhh fall to sleep like a baby with a smile on your face!.. if you aren't married then just do the boring excercises go to bed and focus on one thing over and over.

Re: Thai connection
If I do the ``deed'' then it's all night long! I'll never get any sleep that way.
On a happier note, the 500mcg melatonin dose is actually more effective than the 3mg doses I was taking earlier to help me sleep. Here is an article claiming that lower doses of melatonin are better. Hey it worked for me!

hmmm i did 1.5 mg of melatonin a few times..... i found it a lot more powerful than the standard 300ug that they advise you to take.
