Anyways, I've been a pretty devout user of Firefox. Loved it's ability to customize it's appearance, browser the internet quickly, it's plethora of extensions, and it's adblocking ability. What I didn't really like too much was it's excessive memory usage (>100MB in most cases) and its all too frequent crashes. These crashes also came at infrequent times, where I would have trouble recovering the pages I was viewing.
My friend then suggested Opera 9, having just been released, I decided to give this a try. Not only does it use less memory than Firefox, it comes with all the features we've grown to love in Firefox like tabbed browsing and mini-search in the upper right hand corner. It's also got really nice keyboard shortcuts, widgets, built-in IRC chat, built-in Bittorrent, built-in e-mail, widgets, notes, and as a surprising bonus to me, the ability to tile windows. So no more having 5 windows open just to view things side by side!
Although it doesn't support extensions, it does support ad blocking as well as being the fastest browser according to some empirical test. Needless to say, this is my new browser.
For the record I'm not a spokeperson for Opera, nor am I an employee or affiliate.
Edit: I found a great list of extensions for Opera. Many of them are serve the same purpose as the ones in Firefox.

Heh, about 18 months ago I had a try of Opera 8.x, and since then I haven't looked back. Occasionally I'll have to use Firefox at university or work, but I'm more than happy to do that as it's a fantastic browser, but I find Opera a little more suited to my browsing needs.
Firefox and its extensions are still my choice when doing web development work though.

Why would you want to use another browser when you could use Microsoft's Internet Explorer and have peace of mind that you are using the most secure and bug free browser available? Surely a company with 95% of the market share wouldn't release insecure software. Besides, we should support Microsoft, because they actually innovate new features. If it weren't for Microsoft's Internet Explorer, we wouldn't have things like tabbed browsing, or tiled browsing, or Javascript, or plugins, or customizable themes, or any of the other cool features one has come to expect in a web browser. Ever since Microsoft finally destroyed Netscape, they have been focused on nothing else but adding new features into Internet Explorer. That is why Microsoft's browser does so much more today than it did five years ago! Down with competition. Support the Microsoft Monopoly (tm) and continue to purchase great, secure and bug free software for almost no money at all.

And yet, bundling IE with every computer hasn't stopped a number of viable alternatives from popping up and capturing market share. This month IE accounts for only 64% of our traffic, doesn't sound like a monopoly to me!
Of course 94.3% of our users run Windows, but that's an entirely different story.

Yes, I've heard that Firefox is great for web dev, but Opera is the most enjoyable for my regular browsing needs.

Not to mention when you go back to a page, it instantly loads, instead of refreshing and taking forever. The mouse gesture become second nature after a couple weeks too. Things like holding down the right mouse button while using the scroll wheel lets you scroll through different pages that are open.
I've been using it for years and it is the best no doubt.

damn you... im considering a switch (or at least trying it out)...
how about bookmark exporting? can you export to clean xHTML bookmark files, or crazy XML formats like firefox?

A bit off-topic, but does anyone know of a plug-in/extension/feature in any browser which allows one to "save state"? Like, say I have 45 tabs open and I need to restart my computer. I want to be able to instantly open all of those tabs back up just as i had them but so far I haven't found a way.

I was under the impression that Opera did that by default? 
But yes, the "Session Saver" extension for FireFox has that functionality.

I use a combination of Firefox and Mozilla. Firefox doesn't support mplayer plugins while on Linux, while Mozilla does, so if I want to watch some web based streaming video I have to run Mozilla. I'm pretty sure Opera can't do it either. I might switch to just using Mozilla and Opera.

I've been using opera 8.xx for a long time, although I did have some memory problems on my last computer, which was a p4 3.06ghz HT processor with a gig of ram. It was hogging it like mad, but on my laptop I don't. I'll look into opera 9, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. What I hate is when programs start adding a bunch of features I don't use and don't need.

Opera 9 does this by default.

Meh...I think I'll stay with Firefox. I really see no reason to change. Even if Opera was slightly faster I probably wouldn't even notice...
