large pin set, many aborts on coco fiber
    #582204 - 03/18/02 10:17 AM (23 years, 15 days ago)

my grandma cased so cakes in coco and had a pretty big pin set. it seems like the majority are aborting.
is there any techniques to minimize this?
they are pfs, and mazs in a rubbermaid with perlite getting indirect light and a daily misting.
should the coco look dark brown (wet) or light?

Large pinsets usually lead to many aborts for beginning cultivators...To achieve a large pinset with a high sucess rate you need to have the most optimum conditions for fruiting.

Some problems associated with the high abort rate are as followed:
1) Excessive Co2 levels. (Not fanning enough)
2) Humidity too high. (Needs to be around 88%)
3) Insufficent fresh air (Fanning/Air intake)
4) Excessive loss of moisture from casing (Not misting enough)
5) Excessive moisutre in casing (Misting too much)

Coco does dry out fast, and it is best to be mixed in a 50/50 mix with verm instead of peat. However, when the pins are forming you need to mist, but you need to mist very gently. Too much misting will cause the pins to abort. The casing shoudl have been at its OPTIMUM water capacity during pin initiation.

Sounds like your doing fine IMO. Just try to keep those temps and humidities at some stable leveles as well as fanning 2-3 times a day and you'll be ok.

Good luck,
