New pasturization idea!!!

On a whim I decided to measure the tempeture inside my clothes dryer. It bounces between 150 and 170F. Has anyone ever tried pasturizing a pillow case full of straw etc. etc. in the dryer? If so, what were your results?

I'm curious how you measured the temperature....

A clothes dryer & damp SHIT is a combination that will get your balls BLUE. Meaning, SHE will not like it. If there is a she in your life.
On the stove, in a pot of hot water, with the h/poo INSIDE a plastic bag, IS SIMPLE, - CLEAN & EASY, if you use a candy thermometer.

Wouldn't that start of fire or something? I don't know for sure but i don't think it would be very safe.

you would brake the belt on your dryer very quickly, unless it was a very small amount, but you'd still get poo all over your clothing and the children would laugh.

I have a temp probe on a cord. I jammed the cord in the door so the probe was suspended in the center of the dryer.

that might work if you used an oven bag or an autoclave bag and impulse sealed it... but then again, that big load of shit would probably beat the crap out of your dryer.
not to mention, it's gonna make your home smell just as much as cooking it in the oven or stove. i like the cooler idea and the garbage can in the shower idea...

I was actually thinking of putting the substrate in dry - not wet. Then drying for however long. Taking it out then adding x amount of bottled water till I get the perfect mix. Then spawning. I can get quite a bit in a pillow case. Dry straw and dung dont way barely anything, so it wouldn't be hard on the motor/belt. As long as its all contained in a pillow case there would be no mess. And at 170F there would be no fire hazards.

except the flaw in that is that pasteurization occurs with moist heat at those temps. heating something dry to that temperature is no longer pasteurizing and won't be effective.

You may be correct. Maybee dry pasturization is not possible. But, if its only about getting the bad guys to 170F for x amount of time, what difference would it make whether it was wet or dry heat? Ther may be factors I'm overlooking. But thats why I'm here - So we can peace it together

i'm pretty sure i'm correct ... its a matter of thermodynamics, and something well understood in this hobby and related microbiological studies
dry heat is ineffective because dry air is not a good conductor of heat as moist air. it also does not penetrate the "nooks and crannies" as moist heat would. it may be possible to attain a dry heat pasteurization of sorts, but it would require a combination of a higher temperature than 170F, and would require a longer amount of time... that exact temperature and time i can't tell you for certain, don't know if anybody has determined such a thing (in mycology or otherwise), would be interesting to know actually... but that's moot anyway if your dryer only gets to 170 right?

Also it doesn't germinate spores of molds, and most spores easily survive 170°F dry heat for short times.

You may be correct, perhaps dry pasturization is not possible. But, if its all about kepping the bad guys around 170F for x amount of time, what difference does it make if the heat is wet or dry? There may be factors I have not considered - but thats why I'm here.
